culture is a powerful motivator. this is why its bad to just import a way of doing things that work in other countries. people like to say that if we just took their school system and had it here we would do so much better. now despite the failings of the American system doing such a thing would be a massive failure as we simply will not act in the way such a system would require. no matter how great something else works for others its folly to blindly imitate. to solve the over work problem you need to understand the root of why, only then can you find a solution that works.

Japan's sex problem could cause the population to fall by 40 million by 2065

Japan's fertility problem hit a new low last year: 2016 was the first year since 1899 that fewer than one million babies were born in the country.

New data suggests the trend isn't poised to let up anytime soon.

Japan's National Institute of Population and Social Security Research predicts that the country's current population of 127 million will decline by nearly 40 million by 2065.

Demographic experts point to younger generations' waning interest (and ability) to start families, along with low immigration rates, as the primary causes of the decline.

Mary Brinton, a Harvard sociologist who studies Japan, says Japan's work culture often prizes long hours at the expense of an active social life. For several decades following World War II, men worked while women raised children. Now, as more women enter the labor force, both sexes are finding it difficult to start a family of their own.

1.4 expected births per woman in Japan; only 0.1 less than the EU as a whole. Same as Germany, Austria, Italy. Higher than Greece, Spain, Poland, South Korea, to name a few. (numbers and order slightly vary depending on the list on the page, but the general idea's the same). So no, it's not "crazy over there."

Highly tempted to drop my health insurance provider. Two months ago, I went to see a dermatologist to have a mole looked at; it was subsequently removed then and there. In addition to the $45 co-pay, I (eventually) got a notice from my insurance provider about a $120 bill I was going to receive. Today, two months after the visit I get a bill $225. Apparently you absolutely must be born in the country to gain Japanese citizenship? ...Oh wait, nevermind, a quick googling suggests that they just require you to give up your old citizenship. I think I just misremembered, actually.
