Fuzzy logic's been around since forever, it was just a fairly-ridiculous buzz word that trended because people who didn't know better believed that programmers could only code true/false on a computer, and the idea that you could e.g. tell a computer "well this is 60% likely" seemed like a revelation to them.

In fact, the float variable has let you do "fuzzy" logic since forever. It's called a "probability". You can use probabilities like logic, but not using any "fuzzy logic" magic, just using what you learn in school about how probabilities work.
... not really. Related-ish, but not the same. Fuzzy logic didn't really have much to do with programming when it started poking about, far as I can recall. More a mathematics and/or pure logic thing.

Also "forever" is apparently the sixties or thereabouts for the term itself, 20s from the general area of multivariable logic systems. Occurs to me I never bothered to check the originating point until just now, huh.

I'd be utterly unsurprised to find someone's been abusing the term or conflating it with probability related junk, though. Which is unfortunate, if so.

I mean, she was kind of doomed from the start. The hardware works in boolean logic, it's the only thing it understands- so the entire endeavor needs to not only overhaul the very underpinnings of programming logic, it needs to also spark a hardware revolution.

Actually, i almost missed this part, but it's not really true. You can have triple-valued logic perfectly fine in code and it doesn't matter that the underlying system is binary, the same as base-10 doesn't matter. A variable that could be true, false, or both at the same time, could be implemented merely as a 3-state logic.

Similarly, you can have partially-true, partially-false, and mixes of true/false in the same variable. It's just implemented as a more complex variable at the code level. The only question is that you need to define meaningful operations that occur on these values, which can be shown to solve some coding problem more elegantly than the existing bool.

Fun fact: In 2017 I was working about a block away 30 meters away from George Boole´s house.

We need clarity: you were either in the same block as George Boole, or you were not. none of "pretty much" nonsense.

(EDIT: you keep changing the value. That's not in the spirit of mr Boole)

Eeh, judge by yourself. Boole´s house was in front of the bridge. I was working in the building around the corner. Technically it´s a different building but they´re all adjacent to each other...

Which, by transitive property, means you were touching the same building as Boole! And, uh, since Boole was at some point touching the house, then, because math and ... Logic! You touch the Boole!

I kinda wish they pushed forward with that, because I still don't know where she was going with the non-boolean logic and all. How, is a logic value that's both true and false at the same time "feminist"? Sure, we can make that, but I'd like to see it in action, and to see when it's actually useful to have that.
Heh, yeah.  It's like trying to describe luminosity by saying "You know how a coin flip can land heads or tails?  Imagine it lands on its edge.  Now you understand the space between light and dark."

Bit-logic is an awful metaphor for spectrums, and very few binaries are evil :P  The gender binary is an exception...  I mostly blame First Past The Post and organized religion~

And yeah, you can simulate trinary math, but it's really still binary underneath unless you're making a new kind of hardware.

I know its memed a lot but gender studies is a perfectly legitimate academic field.

technically it's a different building says you, I can't tell where the divisions are supposed to be

damn thing looks like the housing equivalent of sequentially conjoined catsplosion*

if there's no space between them it's the same building dagnabbit

Makes me remember it's been a while since I've been in a particularly urbanized area. Last good long while the only things I've seen that looked like that were shopping plazas and apartment buildings, and generally the ruddy things had the decency to have roughly the same height roof.

* Incidentally, is that moddable yet? Disease or something that physically attaches children to their birthing whatever, making a new beast with X+Y number of body parts? Maybe even able to be split apart and survive, if things go amazingly well.

This is so strange--found a malicious website, or at least tagged as one, while loading Bay12. I presume it's because of the only thread loading, the Random things you drew (as in the image site host), as seen in the screencap below (and it was the slowest to load). >_>
I saw this before when first checking my PC a few days ago, and wondered where that site even popped up. At least now I know where it's coming from.
Spoiler: Image (click to show/hide)
Or something? I don't understand what's going on, but I've never seen that site anywhere. (Nor is the IP listed anything of my locality)
Hum. :-\
And yet checking the Random Things You Drew thread has all images being able to be loaded?
Maybe it's one of those last 6 (to the right, including the tab that's currently open).

I think it was hypothesized that the cause was either a rogue image host someone used or something screwy in someone's avatar rotator

Huh, I encountered it again while loading this. I guess it's related to BMM for some reason. Contacting time \o/
Thanks for that!

I know its memed a lot but gender studies is a perfectly legitimate academic field.
People like to use soft fields as examples to de-legitimize either the poor ("you should have gone into a STEM field") or academia in general.  A soft field that is also associated with feminism?  Let the memes flow.

I don't disagree with you at any level, hence why I stated at the hardware level. If you want to define a shitload of soft data-structures that cross-inherit like stereotypical Arkansas hillbillies living in the runoff from a viagra synthesis facility, that's perfectly okay. However, if you're looking to create a language that is free from the patriarchal structures of boolean mathematics, you cannot do it without fundamentally changing the hardware. At the end of the day, there will be a compiler. At the end of the day, your code will become machine code, and that will be in hard binary.

It doesn't matter how beautifully non-binary your feminist programming is, it will still get crushed and chewed up into patriarchal dominance enforcing binary at the end of the day. Which, if you're taking a bit more of the piss than I am, could probably be fit into some form of clever analogy.
