You can have machines gain sentience and outperform all other life on the planet in SimEarth.

Heck yeah. If I recall you needed a super-advanced civ, and then had to..... irradiate it? Some manner of catastrophe occurring to a sufficiently advanced civ could result in machine life.

They would consume all else on the planet if not stopped quickly.

Anyway here you go.

Play you self some SimEarth

Yeah, I think nuking a Nano Age city would spawn robot pops.

Yep.  They start as nonsentients of course (since only one species can be sentient at a time) but they have a lot of advantages over other lifeforms.  IIRC they thrive anywhere that isn't ocean...  So you can boil off the oceans and they'll cover the planet.  Their exodus can take centuries as they build new cities as fast as they leave.

SimLife and SimEarth were fantastic. The latter was way better than the former, though. Much more lively games, whereas most SimLife games have very little of note going on in my experience. That being said, I had an amazing game of SimLife where I had grey goo event with cockroaches.

They evolved to be flying and carnivorous and outbred all the species of the world, flying to every continent in a great swarm and wiping out all life. It is terrifying. It was inevitable.

I recall the SNES port being way better for SimEarth

So by chance I caught an episode of Young Sheldon... wow, I didn't think I'd get to see a show which so strongly aspires to achieve the zen-like state of Maximum Unfunniness.

Ironically, Sheldon wasn't originally intended to BE autistic, it just kinda happened IIRC

Better than all the ones where the universe won and we never existed, I guess.
