Eesh, conflicted. Caravan Palace will be doing a show within relatively reasonably reachable distance, at the end of october. On the one hand I could afford to go and I fucking love those folks' music. On the other it would entail a five-ish hour drive... and dealing with driving in Atlanta. The probably 200-ish buck pricetag (tickets, overnight stay, gas) and five hour drive isn't that bad, but.... Atlanta. Fucking Atlanta. Fucking Atlanta traffic. Atlanta traffic. Atlanta traffic is fucking miserable. Super miserable. So. Conflicted. I literally add hours to drives to avoid Atlanta and its traffic, but. Caravan Palace ;_;

In some kind of theoretical sense, but a flight ticket on top of everything would tip financial concerns way over my line. Quick check suggests that would somewhere between double and triple the cost involved, even discounting gas et al.

Right now I'm probably just... going to get their new album or something. Maybe an extra copy of whatever has Dragons on it to donate to the library. Y'know, support without having to contend with Atlanta. Maybe I'll get frisky between now and then, I'unno.

It's atlanta.  that's a major transport hub (hence the traffic).  If you dont want to drive, perhaps a bus or train ticket?

What is your city of departure?

That's... actually a thought. Tallahassee's probably the main option for departure (panama city and dothan are roughly similar trips, but panama's still kinda' rekt), and there's definitely a bus route involved. Be a bit more complicated logistics wise since I'd need dropoff/pickup, but still. I'll have to look into it a bit more.

So, I am expecting a shiny new yellow print head in the mail.  Ebay says it should get delivered today.  I get a bit excited, since I've been working on getting this abused printer working for basically a month now.

I look at the tracking log...  Then I wonder what the fuck the postal service is fucking doing.

Pretty prairie has 600 residents.  I'm not giving my name or address.  Besides, malicious actors already know my rough geographical locality, through a combination of advert tracking scripts, unique browser identification tags, and IP address regionalization.

The advert companies are NOT very careful about how they transmit the data the collect.  They (malicious actors) dont need to do a lot of work to know such things. Why do you think computer security people scream bloody murder about the advert industry and its lax practices?

Wrong isn't the right word. It's friggin' weird, though. For one, it's utterly unlike, as near as I can tell, literally everything else that's ever been awarded a hugo in that category. It's not really an individual work, it's very nature renders it basically impossible to complete, it's not so much any particular sort of content itself so much as a container for it... it's like giving a hugo award to book binding or somethin'. So on, so forth.

For two, at least by the wiki page on the category, it wasn't published or translated within the last calendar year (AO3's been around like a decade or so). Individual works within it were, but... still.

For three, it's not really anything specifically to do with sci-fi or fantasy, either. The stuff's heavily involved, sure, but it's not nearly as closely tied as most older/other winners seem to be. It's just a really odd choice.

It's not a bad thing, exactly (and it's not even remotely like I dislike AO3, even if I probably wouldn't mention it in polite company due to how much smut is on it and how extreme it can get*). Just weird. My reaction's varyingly intense confusion with a side of disappointment I probably won't be able to get the library I work at to mention it much or at all due to all the smut on it.

* I didn't check too hard on the other ones, but this might be the first hugo winner that qualifies as child porn in some countries
