And I don't think 'bell' itself is Latin either, and notificatio sounds more Spanish than Latin.

Considering Spanish, French, and Italian (more noticeably Italian) all descended fairly directly from Latin,...

I know. (Also Portuguese and Romanian).

They're called "Romance languages" for that very reason
https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romance_languages

Again. I KNOW THAT. (edit: Unless Reelya's response wasn't actually at me)

Aren't like half of all English words descended from Latin
I don't know the exact proportion, but English is grammatically Germanic. It has borrowed many Latin words, initially when its speakers were on the continent and then settlement and church-based ones from the Roman invasion and Augustinian mission respectively. After 1066, many, many French words entered common parlance - an inevitable side effect of conquest. There were, themselves, often based on Latin. Later, some .... 18th century? ... scholars attempted to impose Latin diction and vocabulary on English, with very mixed results.

And then French became what nobles often spoke. The mishmash that is English is due to it's unique history which is full of conquests and cultural transfers.

No idea if there was some etymological cross pollination with the Roman conquest of Britain.

Sure, but Roman Britain was all but eliminated by the Saxons. You can probably see more traces of that in Welsh, because that's who the Welsh are, they are the holdouts from the original Britons.

Interestingly that was the reason that the French wrote so many King Arthur stories. Arthur was connected to pre-saxon Britain: Celts and Romans, and it's believed that this legitimized the French nobles as having some legit roots there, when the common people were almost all of Saxon origins.

Geoffrey of Monmouth who originally wrote the King Arthur stories not coincidentally wrote these after the French conquests, complete with nods back to the Roman days, and casting the Saxons as the baddies. It's the same old story of writers writing stuff that appeals to and legitimizes the current rulers, especially when they got their power through questionable means and will jump at any excuse to legitimize themselves.

Then they got almost conquered by the vikings, but they beat the vikings and got conquered by the normans, who were actually French, but who were basically vikings.

Oh, also, if you want it to be exclamatory - 'Habemus Papam!' - you might want to use the vocative. So 'Habemus Papa!'

Grammatically, yes, but 'Habemus Papam' is actually the traditional phrase.

It's also the only part I didn't make a point of running through Google Translate, as I would expect the cardinal protodeacon to do when announcing Pope #YOLO.

Hence why I said settlements.

Lancaster (the second part meaning camp in Latin), and so on.

(Although I'd say Roman Britain wasn't eliminated by the Saxons. There's definitely evidence of a driving to the West, but also of intermarriage and cohabitation.)

I guess this goes in WTF. The dutch basement family they recently discovered

https://www.news.com.au/world/europe/dutch-family-of-seven-discovered-in-basement-of-remote-ruinerwold-farmhouse/news-story/2c3c664dd3a975486e65f6bd96023d2f

Quote
A man who rented an isolated farmhouse where a family were waiting for the “end of the world” has been arrested over claims he imprisoned them in a “secret room”.

The news comes as puzzled Dutch police revealed some of the alleged “cult” victims can no longer speak properly after their nine-year ordeal, The Sun reports.

The family of six were discovered after the eldest son walked into a bar in nearby Ruinerwold — about 60 miles north of Amsterdam — and asked for help.

Jan Zon van Dorsten, 25, escaped and went to the cafe-bar where he downed five beers before raising the alarm.

The best bit is that the escapee went to a pub with matted hair, long beard, tatted clothes then orders and downs five beers before saying they need to call the police.

Also:

Quote
Following the raid it was discovered the family can barely talk and speak in a bizarre “fantasy language” after their many years in isolation.

Police had great difficulty understanding the “incomprehensible” victims who slept and ate on the floor of the windowless room, according to local reports.

They were down there so long that they developed their own dialect akin to something Tolkien would have thought up.

This may be the best bit:

Quote
Some of the younger family members were convinced they were the only humans on earth, according to local reports.

There's movie potential here.
