I seem to remember it being kinda but not entirely like tinnitus.  It can be annoying, which supposedly led to some British shopowners placing high pitched noise generators outside their shops to annoy away young loiterers.

Nothing "supposed" about it, and it wasn't just a British thing. The guy who invented the device has sold thousands of the things,

And (as I'm sure the article notes), won an Ig Nobel prize for it ... Checking the sample, it seems I can still hear it, but it's much weaker/difficult to notice than it was when I originally came across the thing

I haven't been able to hear those frequencies since I was 12. That has more to due with a hearing protection mishap and a shotgun than anything else.

Oh god, I can still hear it! Only on my wired headphones, though. Bluetooth audio (with the AAC codec) appears to have a lowpass filter somewhere in the chain that blocks a 17.4 KHz tone entirely. In fact:

Frequency cutoff varies widely from device to device with AAC. None of them approach Hi-Res—as expected—but AAC doesn’t reach frequencies high enough to match CD quality, LDAC or standard Bluetooth’s SBC in any instance. That’s concerning for anyone who prizes audio quality over convenience.

The Huawei P20 Pro performs the worst, with a roll-off occurring at an stunningly-low 14.2kHz—very much still with the range of most people’s hearing. The LG V30 performs marginally better by rolling off at 16kHz, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 at 17kHz. The iPhone 7 performed by far the best, extending its limit up to 18.9kHz. Although Apple’s phone begins a slower roll-off that has a -3dB point set at about 18kHz.

One of my students deliberately played it in class a couple years ago and I was out of commission until he turned it off, LOL. I think he thought I wouldn't be able to hear it.

I feel like I hear it, but I imagine that if I wasn't aware it was there I would either get irritated for what I thought was no reason or ignore it.

Have you ever felt like you heard something?  I hate that feeling.

Weird, usually I feel the voices. 
I guess they don't want to shout over the tinnitus - more's the pity.

I've heard the mosquito noise in stores, from computers, and other stuff before and it never really bothered me
