To be fair, from what I remember that's before they know that the strange alien goo is strange alien goo. And the ship's human, but made using parts from all over the solar system so it doesn't look like a regular military ship.

As far as they're concerned, they found a purposely vented ship with some weird looking gunk with the reactor off. Unless the reactor'd been obviously sabotaged there's very little reason to think that powering it up's gonna cause things to go sideways.

I don't know, things covered in goo are never really something you want to be messing with in  a sci-fi setting it always ends poorly for those involved.

The Goo would also probably prefer if you stopped trying to steal its stuff...

The goo's also non-sapient. Just really, really, really horrible to touch by virtue of what it does to general self-replicating systems like human cells.

I have a few issues with the decision making of the main characters, but at least if I shut that part off I mostly enjoy the show.  Even and especially with the limited facts they have, they dont exactly make the choices that benefit themselves or humanity as a whole.

The books are a bit better in that it actually expands on the characters and their motives. Part of Holden's issue in making stupid decisions is simply that he has a solid idea of what the "right" thing to do is and doesn't think much beyond that, so he does stuff like keep releasing information that just causes more problems. Miller winds up giving him a dressing down for it at one point.

That seems to be the case for the most part.

Boris johnson gave an interview in which he said that, just prior to the invasion of Ukraine, in feburary 2022, Putin threatenen the UK with missile strikes which 'would only cause a single minute of pain'.

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-64397745

Quote from: Putin
I do not want to hurt you, but with a missile strike it will only hurt a minute

The WTF is, why didn't the Uk declare war on Russia for that? That threat was a clear reason for an article 5
(especially, considering that Russia has committed both chemical (Skripal family) as well as nuclear attacks (Alexander Litvenenko) on British soil in the past 10 years, which didn't only target Russian defectors, but also irradiated / killed /  harmed British civilians).

Probably because meaningless posturing isn't worth killing everyone over? That seems pretty obvious to me!

So threatening to not interfere with genociding the people of Ukraine is not worth starting a war over.

Ceteram censeo Putinist Russia esse delendam

I dunno man. The whole reason the UN was formed after WW2 was to prevent shite like that from ever happening again.

Hasn't been doing a very good job of it then.

I cannot disagree with that observation (but that doesn't mean I have to agree with the fact)
