The Elf Acception (or not so much) Thread
« on: October 28, 2010, 06:21:42 pm »

Well some people have said that treating elves as anoying tree-huggers is just stupid since they've changed a lot in 0.31.x , and are no longer worthless bringing HUGE amounts of cloth, rather they bring some pretty interesting things. So...Vote and discuss.

They just squat outside of your fortress and murder defenseless immigrants. They are complete cowards in battle. COMPLETE COWARDS I TELL YE. Unacceptable.

They also get in the way of dwarven steel industry.

I always tend to treat elves different based on what they bring me.  I don't exactly hold much of a hatred or dislike of elves but if I'm running low on funding and too busy to start a moneymaking industry I'm more likely to seize from an elven caravan then anyone else.

Ambiguous poll is ambiguous. It's asking two questions simultaneously, both yes or no questions where answering 'yes' to one means answering 'no' to the other and vice versa.  The choices on offer are 'yes' and 'no'. Hrrmm. I'm not sure which question I'm answering.
Due to poll-based confusion, here is my answer in textual format;
Elves suck!
They're pompous, they have a wood monopoly and they live too long. Bah to them.

They still bring a fair wad of cloth which i rarely have a use for......i tend to seize a lot from the first as i work on the belief that this leads to more animals in future.  Since they have no diplomats in current vanilla trees aint the issue, i rarely cut much anyway, as a fan of magma smelter/forge, the wood they bring is nice till my underground tree farms wind up

From yr 3 onwards i tend to butcher them as they dont have what i ultimately want from a trader......foreign metals.
It gives my squads and weapons kills and my engracers something to engrave...theyre also a predictable fodder for testing elaborate traps on (though magma leaves little behind)

You are asking if the horrid monsters that live homeless in the woods and feast upon dwarven flesh are an acceptable civilization?

I regularly purge them from the world. Which is a lot harder since the new villages started.

Well let's look at it this way:

Dwarves: Fond of drink and industry and underground places.

Humans: Fond of drink and sex and industry and killing overworld dwellers.

Elves: Fond of trees, and getting mad at anything that ISN'T fond of trees.

Suddenly I don't feel bad about killing trees.

My problem is the way they just walk in and flat out tell you they won't allow you to cut down trees. Not "We respect nature and ask that you do to" not "If you don't cut down all these trees, we'll give you free shit", they just demand it, insulting you and calling you a butcher while they're at it. They'll probably do it even if you haven't touched a single tree, they just assume you think about nothing else than tree-killing because you're dwarves. They're not hippies, they're racist assholes.

They're not hippies, they're racist assholes.
And this, is what makes the Dwarf Fortress elves so much better than your average elf.
But, it would still ruin the image of them, if we suddenly said they where okay.

So... from what I'm hearing, seizing goods from elves will make them bring animals? Cuz to the elves, animals are considered inferior to a ton of cloth?

I disliked elves even before I had heard of DF. Hence why I have said, repeatedly, I will always love Bioware for letting me slaughter elves while sideing with werewolves. Elves just tend to piss me off in most fantasy, too arrogant.

War elephants.  I grow extremely forgiving when brought elephants to turn into tusked war machines.  They may be arrogant scumbags, but they are useful arrogant scum bags, to be tolerated while they serve a potential use.
On a side note, I don't know if anyone has conclusively proven that elves bring more animals when irritated.

  • "Acception" isn't even a word.
  • Nice to see the Content-Free Stale Injoke Parade is out in full force.
  • Elves were never really "hippies". Read some of ThreeToe's stories some time, they can get pretty damn militaristic.
