How do i drop stuff from a high Z-Lvl?

Say i want to build a 10 level tower, and on top have a platform that reaches out. I want to be able to put a cage or many cages ( filled with enemies of course ) on the platform and then with the pull of a lever remove the floor to drop them. I tried using a floor grate, however i was unable to build a cage on top of it. Any suggestions where i wont kill any of my dwarfs ( i have a bad habit of channeling and either crushing someone or having the miner having his legs broken )

you either pit them, or put the cage next to a cliff and use water to push them into it.

I guess i'm gonna have to learn how to make a pump stack and power it with windmills then.

Just so you know, dropping a cage will not harm the creatures inside.

I actually have the similar question as this guy here

How can i instead setup a place to pit the enemies against each other without having to setup mechanisms to open the cages and keeping my dwarfs safe from harm?

Building the cage right next to the pit is the onlt think I can think of.
Also, fun experiment, I hear that you can pit creatures through a bridge, like it's not even there. Have not tried this myself, though.
