Infections
« on: February 23, 2011, 11:59:22 pm »

I've been logging all my patients, and have noticed a few factors that increase the chance of infection.
Actions/Chance of Causing Infections

No Cleaning:  100%
Cleaning with Dirty Water:  +25%
Cleaning with Clean Water:  +/-0%
Cleaning with Soap:  -50%
Delayed Suturing:  +50%
Delayed Wound Dressing:  +25%
Day Of Uncompleted Treatment:  +1%
Trait Impact:  +/-5% (per degree)

Soap is a very useful, if bugged, hospital necessity.  It drastically reduces chances of infection.
These are approximations, and may vary.
Casts vs. Splints seem to make no difference.

Are Dwarven Bathtubs as effective as cleaning them?

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

No.  Dwarven bathtubs appear to have absolutely no effect on infections.

And the numbers were gathered from a hundred or so poor sapsvolunteers.

Wow, I am impressed.  If those numbers are real, it must have been painful to find them.

The mark of the immature man is that he wants to die nobly for a cause, while the mark of the mature man is that he wants to live humbly for one.

::) I see what you did there.

That said, it's nice to see some (rough) numbers on this.

I'm curious what the barely conscious ai wrote about.
Well that went better than expected.  He went nuts and punched a rabbit to death, then the dogs and the whole dining hall ripped him to shreds.

I wouldn't say no cleaning is 100% chance, i;ve had dwarves with no infection modifier go with massive cuts for a long time with no infections or treatment.  80% would probably be better.   maybe you have really bad luck eh?  Oh and cleaning with bad water makes it worse?  God that makes wells so much more nessicary....

The 100% is mostly the fact that dwarves who aren't cleaned won't get treated any further, and WILL get infected and die if it's a hospitalizing injury.

Injuries that can heal on their own (like some cuts) will effectively be healed.  Once healed, infections will not worsen, and will gradually get better.  HOWEVER, infections cause bleeding to varying degrees per infection (or at least the effects of bleeding).  If the infections heal too slowly to account for bloodloss, the dwarf can die without any actual wounds.

I checked my logs and 124 dwarves have been tested.  Amazingly, i've lost only 12 patients, and 14 total.  My healthcare is very well set up, and also very functional once I discovered soap's invaluableness.
