Targetted attacks: Maybe I'm retarded, but...

I don't get any kind of targeting options, attacks of opportunity, anything like that with any of my adventurers. I'm just using the arrows and/or numpad to attack. I've also tried Alt+numpad and Shift+numpad, but it just makes normal atacks and severs limbs, etc. This is all melee, by the way.

What am I doing wrong? I wanna bite off toes, too!

In adventure mode I killed a Hydra within fifteen minutes, and then was mortally wounded by Carp while swimming in a river.
