Embark on snowy biome.
Expose hell to sunlight.
Freeze hell over. :)

This would be a bit more  impressive if you generated thisworld in .17; demons generated in that version are stronger.

(ask ImikNorris how it is done)
Hey, Imik, buddy, pal, how do you tunnel through semi-molten rock? I could make giant slade letters visible from the surface that could spell out any number of awesome things.

You use up/down stairs from below. Unfortunately, going up through a tile prevents you from being able to go up through the neighboring eight tiles, as the stair trick only works on unrevealed tiles.

Basically, the game forgets it's SMR until you reveal it, at which point the stairway has already been carved.

Can this actually be done? Would the caravans have access to it? I thought they needed a 3x3 area to travel through or something.
They actually don't. The "depot access" view is basically useless (and, in my opinion, broken) right now because the merchants only need that 3 tiles wide corridor for wagons which they don't bring now. I know because the entrance to my fortress has a wide corridor of traps followed by a narrow corridor with several bends where my soldiers wait for any invaders that make it past the traps, safe from (cross)bow fire.

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

You need soil for above ground crops.
Mod slade to count as soil.  SOMEONE DO IT NOW FOR SCIENCE!

Drop some topsoil down via cave-in.
Do this in many squares.  (As efficiently as you can while taking into account that it is only once every 3rd square in a grid.)

This is a useful feature..and this is DF.. so im gonna assume its bugged
That's what cages and minecart shotguns are for!  We don't need to control them.  We just need to aim them.

It's possible to get an adventurer down there, and if he proves to be resilient enough, I imagine it's possible to find a demonic fortress with it's bottom open to hell.

So basically, you'll be able to travel across the underworld.

Or, conduct an experiment in which a caravan arrives, block off all possible exits aboveground, and see if they'll leave the map via hell...

My traders left through caverns, so I am pretty sure they will.

Or, you could colonize the Whole god damn world. Yeah, make huge sky scrapers of steel and glass and cry when you're finished and say "i've wasted my life".

one of my poor dorfs fell into a glowing pit, and it turns out that those things actually have animations when people fall into them; first they become those little squares that trees become when you're staring at them from a level above, then they become a dot, then they vanish.

Yeah, my adventurer learned this the very, very, hard way. Oh well, he had his fun slaughtering Antlion Demons

Flood a section, to create mud?
I have a farm plot on some limestone? Might be because I had mud right next to it and it drifted? :S

Muddy tiles let you grow underground plants and such, but not surface plants. You need naturally occuring soil for those.

I suggest capturing lots and lots of elves, and building a giant prison down there.  You can have your dwarves wear demon leather (if that's a possibility - if not, maybe Forgotten Beast leather or something), and torture the elves.

The fIrst guy to do this made demon soap. I don't think leather is an issue here.

Quick question - why silver spikes? Silver is crap for edged weapons.

I thought demons were trap immune? Do weapon traps work on them then?
