SCIENCE of finger pain and wimpy adventurers
« on: November 24, 2010, 04:45:35 pm »

Pain is pain, whether it comes from a leg or a finger

Bone tissue has 10x more pain reception than skin or muscle tissue in the raw files

The leg and the finger have identical tissue layers in the raw files

The leg has a larger relative size than the finger in the raw files. I guess the damage done  to a body part is more severe when the body part is smaller, assuming the damage amount is unchanged:
"You pinch Human 1's thumb, left hand with your left hand, tearing apart the muscle and bruising the bone!"
"You pinch Human 1's right upper leg with your left hand, bruising the skin!

I also tested severing legs and fingers in arena mode with an adamantine short sword, and found after assuming control of the victims and using the health menu, that the pain of a severed leg was equal to the pain of a severed finger.

If my assumptions are correct, especially that pain is not relative to the size of a body part but damage is relative, then finger injuries are more likely to result in extreme, disabling, pain than other body parts.

Has anyone had an adventurer get wimpy over a non-bone finger injury? I know its hard to tell, when your adventurer falls unconscious immediately after being hit in the finger and then has his skull pushed into his brain.

My most powerful adventurer got a chipped foot bone and was strangled to death by a peasant

Does cutting off a finger hurt more than smashing one?

My next adventurer may have to be a hammerer (lasher is kind of boring TBH)

smashed bones = passed out from pain yes?

I'm thinking that its chipped bone>smashed bone>severed appendage in terms of pain, but I could be wrong.

that seems about right, although losing a digit or facial feature seems to cause a lot of pain (ie, losing a finger seems to hurt more then losing a hand) My most recent adventure led me to obliterate an entire town after losing one of my hands in the first five minutes (relatively speaking) it stopped bleeding quite fast and didnt cause any pain at all, although I think its related to toughness (which for me was superdwarvenly tough)

I thought that endurance was how much pain you could take from damage and toughness was how hard it was to sustain that damage?

Endurance is your resistance to tireness and over-exertion, and toughness is how much you can sustain damage.
Willpower is pain.

I haven't done much (read : any) research into it, but I always thought endurance was related to how much you can do before you got tired or over exerted, and how much sleep/food/water you needed

Urist: Ah, gotcha. Always wondered what willpower actually did, only seen it level up sporadically. Makes sense though.
