How exactly do you raise your reputation?
As before I figured that I had to tell a hearthlady or lord or a leader of a faction that I'm "working for"
I've done this before and ben considered a hero but I don't know if its the right way
Reputation spreads through rumours of your deeds. The more people you tell about the troubles you've been solving (or who listen to stories about it told by you or by others) the more your reputation will increase (amongst those who hear you and those who they can conceivably spread rumours about you to).
Do stuff, tell people about it. Just remember that 'reputation' isn't a stat that you own. Travel a while and no-one will have heard of you and you'll need to tell more stories (that'll be useful in the next version where you can take on fake identities and deliberately not tell people about your past as a vicious bandit).

Just don't brag about killing members of a civ to other members of the civ, even if the person you killed was a vampire or werebeast. They'll call you a killer and lower your reputation.

'Killer' may sound unpleasant, but there's not enough indication that it reduces reputation. All it means is that you killed a sapient, including enemies of the civ/site, night creatures. Killing neutrals is considered acceptable among most civs, including human, but of course doing so identifies you as a killer. By itself, the only consequence of this is that town guards will keep an eye on you, and you'll find their asterisk following you around in fast travel.

You mean murderer, which is a bad thing. For killer, see above post.

Sorry if this has already been asked before, but does impersonation do anything?
Can you actually convince an NPC that you're a deity?

Does it even raise Liar skill this version? I never get the option, possibly because my truth value is high.

How do you tell when you're capped on an attribute?

I have a few questions.
#1. Is there a way to interrogate a bandit lieutenant on who their leader is? Like the boss of the bandit gang?
#2. I killed the commander of the bandit gang and in Legends Mode there doesn't appear to have been a successor. Does this mean that all of the members of the gang are dead?

1. Ask 'profession' and they'll tell you.
2. It might, but it can take awhile for leadership to pass if there are any survivors.

Alright thanks for the tips. I did ask the crossbowman his profession but he merely said he was a
"lieutenant". I guess he valued loyalty over his life haha.

EDIT: So what would happen if a bandit gang loses all of its members? Would it disband and cease to exist? If so, would it say so in Legends Mode?

If he only said 'lieutenant' then gang leader was dead, and another hadn't been selected yet, so you could recruit him. He may be the next boss, and can turn on you if you haven't become friendly enough.

An empty group lives on in history! Unfortunately no game mechanics will acknowledge the obliteration of its membership, so you'll never have the authority to build on their sites even though there's no one to stop you. The only way I could be sure is by checking entity histfigs in dfhack, then checking each of those for death dates.

I don't believe it's possible without using Fortress Mode.
