That's horrifying, I would gladly take a bullet for my book collection. Maybe if I could shuffle all my least-favourite books onto the shelves that end up covering the windows, I guess it could work.

Paper in general is fairly effective (for a given thickness - you still need quite a bit of it) at slowing bullets, and even more so at deflecting their course.
