Ooh, look. Turtles. WAIT, WHAT?!
« on: January 18, 2011, 11:16:51 pm »

I go to a nice river excited about starting a fortress called Boatanguished. Well, I pause right as the embark save is finished, and look around. I see the icons for turtles in the water, and notice how many there are. I hit k, and see this.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Any ideas on how the hell a Phantom Spider threw silk OVER A RIVER, and its silk is now FLOATING?!

An no, I hit "U" and there are no people besides my dwarves and myself. No spiders or anything.

Whut?

I would just go with the silk is light enough to float over the water in place.

Phantom spiders are vermin.

Really? As in I can catch them? How do I make them spin silk when I capture them?

They make silk all the time, just like cave spiders. Unlike giant cave spiders, the vermin spiders neither can be nor need to be provoked to spin webs. You don't even need to capture them, although you will want to make cat removal an even higher priority than normal, because cats find them deliciously crunchy.

Last time I experimented with that kind of stuff(40d) I just dropped untamed Cave Spiders into a room and they started spinning silk. Of course, eventually they escaped, but they did give me a decent amount of silk.

How do you assign vermin that you have captured to say a pit or something? I can never manage to get them to show up.

I'm not sure I remember. Maybe I just released them on the spot? Can't really remember how I did it, I just remember that I did it.

Designate the captured spider to be dumped.  Making sure you don't mark the trap instead.  And make sure you have a dump designated.  The vermin will be dumped at that spot, and then free to teleport around as normal.

My last fort had a cat chained up next to the dump when I captured some fairies for display.  Lots of rat and roach remains ended up "appearing" in my garbage dump  :)
