They don't inherit. It's a myth.

What? Yes they do. I don't know about skin, hair and eye color e.t.c because I don't pay any attention to that stuff, but you can definitely see traits inherited between generations. We had a thread just a week or so ago where someone had a near-perfect female dwarf, and was attempting to breed an army of super-babies. It worked! You can also breed animals for muscle and fat, and you will definitely see a change in the amount of meat returned on the larger animals.

I've been studying genetic inheritance in my dwarves. Babies of powerful, healthy dwarves are exactly as likely to birth stupid, slow babies as anyone else.
All my military dwarves are drafted in as immigrants as long as they have only positive physical traits. This eliminates the possibility of their traits being developed, as they don't exist until they come on map, so all traits are "genetic".

Having taken notes of their starting traits and their traits at childbirth (both parents) and of course, the child's, I can safely say that there is no meaningful correlation between parents and children.

P.S. That thread was never actually proven. He posted no screenshots at any time and his computer died not one, but two deaths.

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.
