You can get them automatically. There should be a button where the joining button normally is that says NewGRFs or something. Or Check Online Content. Basically it will look up all the mismatches and let you autodownload what you need.

Last time this got popular I joined and ran across the problem of resource buildings going out of business every few hours. This would lead to transportation companies spending a ton of money running trains to stations that didn't provide anything and leading them to bankruptcy before the owner can come back on. Any way of solving that a bit aside from having several people run a company?

I thought they mostly just went out of business when they weren't used.

If a business was depending on these rail lines I would assume the resources were being used. Unless having enough trains reach the station to pay for themselves and not have it stockpile to its max isn't efficient enough to be considered used. If that's the case the bar for being considered used is kinda absurd in the servers we played.

They go out of business when they can't sell their goods. (as in, unused)
Alternatively, they go out of business when they don't have any more goods, esp. forests and oil wells.
Oil wells have limited quantity, with no new oil produced.  They will run out.
Forests rely on actual trees nearby, from what I understand.  Chop them all down and the forest will eventually vanish.
Otherwise, usage should prevent bankruptcy.

yea, any of the resource-type industries die eventually from lack of resources. but if they start with a huge amount it can take 50-100ingame years to finally bite the dust..
There isn't really a way to combat this, besides having people who don't plan to logon for awhile focus on passengers/mail instead...
like i played on this server maybe 16 hours or so after a previous time, and pretty much all my non-passenger/mail related transports were dead/dieing. Fortunatly in the meantime the towns i was using had grown so much that it had skyrocketed that one aspect of my profits enough to survive.

About when should we expect to see the server unpaused?

Also, newGRFs... I'd like to make some, but I can't find a comprehensive tutorial for them anywhere.  I've found a drawing tutorial, but all of the utilities for encoding/decoding GRF's I've found seem only to be compatible with TTDPatch, not OTTD.

Hey Sensei, Sorry, Been away from the computer. If you want to come back on now, I'll unpause it. Infact, I'll give you the rcon password so you can do it yourself even if I am away.

Well, you don't have to unpause it just for me, but being a multiplayer game it'd be cool if everyone knew some operating hours for the server if it's not always going to be up.

Yeah. I know. I'd be more regular, but things have been pretty crazy for me lately. Should be pretty much settled now. Expect me to be on nearly every weekday from 1800 EST to at least 2300 EST.

But I'll still give you the rcon. I'm fairly certain I can trust you.

TTDpatch and OTTD use the same GRF files.

there's only a couple features that aren't supported in one or the other.

I FINALLY GOT MY HOSTING TO WORK!

I made my computer a DMZ, disabled my firewall, and turned off the annoying symantec feature that blocks any ip from trying to contact your computer.

SHABAM! It worked.

Is there any sort of secret to starting a company? I can turn a profit rather quickly with out mods, but I've been trying the ones used on the Bay12 server and it seems I fall into debt right away no matter what I do. Also, what determines the amount of passengers waiting at a station? I've bus stations with hundreds of people waiting but then nobody waits at the train station even if it's attached to a bus station.

The real secret is starting in when things are fresh. As the current game is now, Industries are starting to die. Production in oil wells and coal mines are on a slow decline, and its been 65 years since the world started. Now What you have to do is start with big passenger lines. Try a 4-6-4 Hudson with a station length of 6, traveling around 130 tiles or so. That'll make serious money if its fully loaded each trip.

EDIT: That whole bit pertains to the situation on the server.

Service ratings affect how many passengers will wait at a station, and so does the city population. Makes sure the stations are actually joined too. But if you plop a bus station in the middle of a big city, its going to cover more populated area then a big train station in a little town. Ratings will matter less in the big city, since there is a larger population to serve overall. Advertising improves service ratings, if only temporarily. But you can, if you're wealthy, fund new buildings.

If you want to hop on the server now, I'm here. I don't know how I missed you just a bit earlier. Guess I was too caught up in Portal 2. The best way to reach is me is through the DFC chat on Steam, so check in there next time. No way I can miss that, unless I'm not actually here.

EDIT2: Message me on steam. I'll be in my room, but not at my desk.

I'm not sure if I'm going to join the server yet, I can hardly break even even when things are fresh. So is advertising the only way to increase ratings?
