Yeah, Die Ärzte is definitely something. Totally seconding that. It's mostly punk/rock[..]

Well it's a mix of punk rock and pop, with a lot of other generes used.
So judging by only one track might be a bit out of place.

And yeah, Kafka is also good, but the problem with some of his shorter stories is that you can't tell if you just missed something or if it's supposed to be that way. That's Kafka for you, I guess.

True.
However you need to rember that a lot of his works have been published posthumously and therefore are unfinished.
Also there are many "deleted scenes" in his books.
Quite a lot of messy work, but a good read nethertheless.

Thanks for all the recommendations so far, folks!  I'll start reporting back more as I get a chance to look through more bits of the music.

As for books, does it have to be novels?

Any kind of material originally written in the language that you think I'd like, or that you particularly enjoy, or that is particularly popular, or that your tourist agency wishes more people knew about.  Hell, I'd be more than happy to get recommendations of your favorite children's books you read as a little kid.  The important thing is that the original language is Russian, German, or Polish, because part of what I'm trying to get is the mentality and natural language use--and those don't come across when you're reading an Englishman's work translated by an entirely different person.

Incidentally, recommended works about the culture in question are also welcome.  I have a book on "understanding Russians," though I don't know how good it is yet, and am always interested in more suggestions from anyone who has them.

For Russian novels, try Sergei Lukyanenko's Night Watch series.

I have taken a liking to music by E Nomine. Since I suck at describing, I'll just say that mystical and/or religious topics rarely sound that badass. And that german and Ominous Latin Chanting go well together.

I'll just leave an example here.
There's also an english version of this one, apparently.

I admit, there might not be a lot of people listening to it. It's a shame, imho.

DF Players never truly leave.  They just abandon the fortress for a few years and then reclaim.

Well I'm in a decent mood today, so I think I'll make a small, representative list of the groups (well at least for some of them) I already mentioned and maybe even add a few new ones.

German

Farin Urlaub: (lyrics included)
Sonne - Sad song. Video has nothing to do with what it's about. Farin enjoys making silly videos.
Dusche - More rocking song. Very well known and very unusual content.
Am Strand - Happy song. Beware the black humour.

Die Ärzte: (lyrics partially included)
Junge - Lovely song with a mix of slow and rocking passages. The lyrics have a couple of typos in them, but the quality of the sound is good.
Nichts in der Welt  - Sad song.
Pro Zombie - Happy song about zombies. No lyrics though :(

The music vdeos of those two are often sort of silly (in a good way) and have nothing to do with what the song is actually about.
Loving it.

Sportfreunde Stiller: (no lyrics included)
Ein Kompliment - Had this stuck in my head for a long time.

Silbermond: (no lyrics included)
Durch die Nacht - Don't know to much about them. They had their breakthrough with this song.

Polish

Golec Orkiestra: (no lyrics included)
Sciernisko - One of the polish bands, I actually liked.
Lornetka - Another fine song of them. Slower than the previous one.

They have a "goralski"-accent, but the lyrics are slang free (might be a bit tricky for you though).

Let me know if those links are even available to you.

I'll be adding stuff, if anything should come to mind.
Couldn't find anything much good from a polish band though.
