good non-roguelike ascii games?
« on: December 16, 2010, 09:17:01 pm »

I am looking for good games that use ascii graphics.  So far I've played dwarf fortress, asciiportal, nethack, and dungeon crawl.
What are some ascii games that are not roguelikes?  Realtime is preferable.

Df, no matter how many times you play it, it's always fun.

Ascii Sector! (was Privateer: Ascii Sector before)
http://www.asciisector.net/

Just got addicted to it a few days ago. I especially love combat in it. It is great fun, both in space and on ground.
It is mostly realtime except ground combat, where time waits for your actions, but every action still takes a certain amount of time instead of turns.
F10 ingame for list of keys, then you should figure everything out. If not then ask.

Edit: Do not forget to download music pack too. It is a separate download. Music adds a lot to the game, it is different on every planet etc.

The above game is ok, the small amount of ships kind of ruined it for me.

I'm going to say Gearhead.

Yes, to some degree its a roguelike. However, the world itself is always the same, just random dungeons and battles. Also, its about giant mechs. You can't go wrong with that.

Corin's Mystery Massacre from here http://www.bay12games.com/curses/

The instructions are mysterious, but you'll figure them out, it's fun.  It's a total blast for the few hours that it'll keep your interest.

How about some First Person Shooters?

Textmode Quake.

Textmode Quake II

Textmode Unreal Tournament.

Jumping off topic, Mplayer will play video files and DVDs in textmode.  In color!

A good ol' classic DOS game called Sleuth comes to mind. It's a murder mystery game (much like Clue), and you play the inspector. You can play with default names, or names of your choice.

ZZT is also another great game.

Kroz was pretty fun too, though you'll need to use Dosbox and maybe tweak it.

Wow, ASCIIpOrtal is serious ASCII insanity, but it's awesome.

3059 is a neat little roguelikish thing. And realtime, too.
