Let's see... Red Panda, Ostrich and Narwhal are the next three on the list. Those sound pretty easy to implement (no new behaviors or anything,) so we might get to see Peregrine Falcons and Giant Tortoises as well.
Peregrine falcons seem like they should come with proper diving behavior, since that's what they're known for. Toady thus may want to do them a bit apart from the ones that don't really need new behavior.

Ostriches could get gastroliths and possibly some sort of camouflage, giant tortoises can retreat into their shells, and some armadillos can roll into a ball. There's also migration as a possibility for a few. Really just depends on how much time Toady wants to spend on the animals.

Squidmen need a [CORRUPT_INTENTIONS].

EDIT: Heh. Didn't mean to post the same joke twice, especially since it wasn't that funny the first time. Didn't realize that it had gone through before my internet re-borked. *Facepalms.*

They make life harder.
The list toppers are the things that need area improvement; it isn't about animals, it's about AI.

Basically some animals arn't in the game because while they are common animals they have certain abilities and serve certain niches that they cannot be added so simply.

The best example would be Chickens who are a VERY recent addition.

Because they didn't get the level of sponsorship that would require.

My anticipation for the next release was already high, but it just skyrocketed.

Giant giant tortoise zombie vampires. We will be the only game with that, I'm sure.

I want to kill an anaconda in adventure mode and find a kobold inside that becomes my slave for life due to kobold tradition.

That and kobolds don't have enough things in the world out to kill and eat them.
