Oooh. Giant tortises for food. Good call. And shells. Someone needs to put money on that :)

This list lacks rhinos.

Toady's post says that rhinos are all ready in the next release.

"If you are looking for the giraffe, rhinoceros or any of a number of domestic animals, they are already in the game for next time! "

Axolotls are awesome, but in terms of getting into DF, pangolins would be quite nice.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Besides being totally awesome and cute, they would even be useful: Fashion their scales into armor!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

No matter what, though, we should focus on something with properties that would be fun, or Fun, in the game, or something that has unique properties. Remember that many of these things can be modded in if they aren't picked.

I... whoa. I would say that that's wanton cruelty to pangolins, but that armor looks amazing.
Poor Toady. Talk about a lot of stuff to implement before the release  :D

Oh man, so hard to decide. Should I go for the Aye-aye or the Kakapo? They're both so delightfully weird animals.

Also, a question
Toady, have you by any chance read Last Chance to See by Douglas Adams, as most of that books starring animals seem to be on the list? Or were the endangered animals added just for the reason that they are so interesting?

Another one:
With animals like the Kakapo that produce a distinct booming sound that can be heard miles away, are you planning to add descriptive sound lines to Adventure Mode when these kind of creatures are around?

pangolins would be quite nice.

Pangolins would be especially good if there were also Giant Killer Pangolins that came in with them.

No, see, you've got it all wrong. This is DF. The dolphins do not tear apart the carp. The dolphins and the carp team up to tear apart you, sort of like some unholy underwater terrorist team.

Caveat: sponsoring an animal puts it "at the top of the list of animals to be added to the game". It does not mean it will be in the next release.
