Heated Floors
« on: December 18, 2010, 01:40:07 pm »

I'm thinking of putting in a heated floor (with magma) under my meeting hall. Will this kill my dwarves from the heat? Does standing on warm rock have any side-effects?

no.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Ice won't form on a tile with flowing magma under it.  Flowing magma doesn't seem to have any effect on creatures, water, bloodstains, or other objects on the floor above so far as I can tell.

Magma convection might also theoretically negate such temperature dependent phenomena such as frost damage to living creatures, frozen mechanisms, and ground upon which crops cannot be planted.

I've never embarked on a glacier and lived, so I'm not sure about the accuracy of these claims.

A Magma warmed tile is heated to 10075 U. normal underground temp is 10040 U, body temp is 10068, fat start melting at 10078 U, other dwarven tissue (and most organic materials in fact) start taking damage at 10250 and catch fire at 10518.

So perfectly safe unless you mess up the piping, then its just dwarfy.

What scares me is that you have all this committed to memory. (or so it seems)

If you hit a dwarf with moving water with sufficient strength it will knock the baby out of the mother's arms.  The water can then be used to sweep the baby into a well or cistern for drowning.  The device which does this can also double as a mist generator.

The numbers are declared in the raws so it just takes a few glances into the material template files to get pretty familiar. For example fat catches fire at 10338.

You could put glass as floor (but glass flor is not engravable) so just a few here and there, so you dwarves could see the lava (this has no other effect that reduce the whealth of the room by reducing the engravings, and just to imagine your dwarves seeing the lava)

Actually, normal underground temperature is 10015 U.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

This arguement is turning into a NO U arguement very quickly, but in a completely different meaning.

Does the magma constantly have to be flowing for this to work?

Cuz I put a magma chamber under my moat to keep it from freezing in the winter and it worked only so long as the chamber was still being pumped full of magma. And I would rather not have to drain the magma sea just to keep my moat from icing over.

You have to keep the magma moving. If you are losing pumps the system will slowly loose magma too.
