Racing games where you make your own track
« on: December 20, 2010, 02:25:24 am »

Yup, I want to hear about all those lovely racing games where the course is built by the player. Everyone probably knows about the Trackmania games, and although I admit they work, I'm looking for something with AI competitors, it's alot less satisfying beating a ghost every single playthrough in my opinion, and I don't want to go online for it.

If possible, I'd also like a game with such optional features as:
-the potential size of the track is either limitless or with more than enough space to build whatever the mind fancies.
-Lots of placeable or moldable eye-candy.
-Weapons
-Customizable vehicles
-Very high speeds
-Low computer requirements

I'm going to throw out Halo: Reach.

With its interesting environments, man cannons, and set pieces you can create visually interesting, complex, maze like race tracks. You can even make turbo pads, and other environment hazards.

With some gentle agreement, you can even get some Twisted Metal action.

My only compliant, is that the Race custom game enforces the use of a vehicle. This locks out the opportunity to have Obstacle Courses.

If you don't mind voiding the warranty on your Wii, I can point you to ways to edit Mario Cart Wii race tracks...

Modnation Racers, probably... from what I understand it's a kart racing game with weapons and powerups and stuff. There's a demo available for it on PSN... as it's only for PS3 as far as I'm aware. The demo includes some track-making ability you can dick around with to see if you like it.

EDIT: It has AI competitors so you're good there. It also seems nice because you can have branching paths that the AI will use sometimes. Oh, and obstacles too.

(this is all based on what I saw in the demo)

It's got potential, sure. But I'd need friends over to enjoy that sort of thing. I'm not exactly capable of that. O\

I'd have to grab the game... But if I do then maybe I'll take you up on that.
Mind directing me to any video examples so I know the sort of stuff that can be pulled off?

If I ever manage to get my hands on a PS3, I may look into it.

Keep them comin'.

It's a lot of fun to make your own tracks, especially seeing how the track pieces can be a bit crazy lol.

There was this game about RC cars on the N64. Can't remember what it was called, but it certainly had that stuff, except customizable cars. Unfortunately, it needed a memory card.

Probably Re-Volt. And yeah, I've experienced it, sadly it doesn't like newer hardware as much. Can't remember if I got it to work or not.

-Lots of placeable or moldable eye-candy. a moderate amount
-Weapons - afaik yes
-Customizable vehicles - kind of (choose chassis, paint colour and tires)
-Very high speeds - sometimes
-Low computer requirements - YES

Trackmania Nations (Bonus; it's free.)

I second Trackmania, as it is the spiritual successor of stunts :)

Have it, and believe it or not, I actually find the building area to be rather limiting at times. Just seems small for the ridiculously long stretches of road I want to go for.
