saw this when training my one-armed militia commander was in the danger room.

If you don't see it, it's the commander batting the spear out of the air.

Badass.

I suppose it's the ranged equivalent of blocking a regular attack.

The spear is considered to be "thrown" at the target, I think, the same way with other weapons.  So, the game treats it like a projectile, and batting it out of the air is how a warrior deals with bolts.

Its actually pretty common. Had a legendary miner bat all 4 goblin arrows out of the air on his way to safety.
