That all sounds great.  But I'm curious, did they add back the other playable character they inexplicably removed when they changed the name to Pirates of the Caribbean?

This one; IMAGE SNIP

Also, where the heck would I get this game?

Also also, there's a sequel to PotC?

They added several back, including a female or two. Not sure if the pictured model is one of them. Just the initial character selection features several choices, once in-game you're able to purchase new outfits that completely change the clothing or character model of the PC. A generic Portuguese sailor, and on to a comely red headed lass, to a scrubby lookin' merchant. I recommend double-checking what outfit you're about to buy so as to lessen the chances for an accidental 16th century sex change. You can also buy outfits/model changes for your companions, as well as customizing names and such, so you could sail the Caribbean with a crew of buxom wenches (no matter what sex, shape, or clothing they originally joined you in). Or a grungy bunch of sea salts lookin' for loot in all the wrong places. In the latest build version you're also able to purchase modifications and different looks for your fleet of ships. I wasn't kidding when I said it was a massive mod. Checkout the forums I linked to in my post above. Or see if this Youtube video gets you hot and bothered enough to just dive right into the experience.

There is a sequel (or two), but as of yet the modding efforts are not nearly organised or puissant enough to take my attention away from the BuildMod (aka PotC: New Horizons). In time I think Age of Pirates 2: City of Abandoned ships (the latest in the SeaDogs/PotC line) will become the new bestest option for Yarr induced high seas hijinx, but that day is not yet come. Checkout the PiratesAhoy! forums, there is a dedicated modding forum for the sequel to PotC, as well as several other games.

PotC is from 2003, and it looks it*. Its age also makes it somewhat difficult to locate it for purchase at a reasonable price as it is so long out of date. Amazon has it on for $50. I can't comment upon whether $50 is a reasonable price for a seven year old game, so you may want to locate other online retailers that are a tad more reasonable. I suppose if you were sufficiently motivated by the cavalier bravado of the sailing scoundrel you might enter into a swashbuckling frame of mind well before finding, buying, installing and firing up the game, leading to a self-fulfilling sort of a situation.

Good Pirate games are difficult to find, but piracy itself is not condoned here on Bay12 as far as I am aware, so I wish you the best of luck in finding it for purchase.

*And behaves like it. Russian dev, buggy game. Massive mod with quite a number of bugs to add to the mix. But honestly, we're on the DF forums. If you can dodge a wrench...

So then the customization is purely cosmetic?

For a second there I thought this was a discussion about pirating video games
Offline piracy: oh, for the days of 5.25" floppies. </sarcasm>

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

And for those talking of offline piracy, I'm afraid I don't even have a ship to rob game makers with anyway!
