I wonder why not? Since marksdwarves don't seem to have any problem with it. Also how do catapults shoot so far down a one tile high hallway?

I believe the catapults constructed by the dwarves use an advanced form of dimensional inversion, causing the stone loaded in them to experience reality at 90 degrees to the rest of the universe.  Then they 'fall' out of the catapult in a horizontal line, landing on whatever is in front of them.

This also explains why it takes an inexperienced operator several days to load one stone.

You know what would be cool? To be able to load catapults with things other than stone. Useless furniture, low-quality crafts, prisoners...the possibilities are endless!
