I think everyone here follows that, If you give a shit about graphics then you wouldn't be playing DF.

Yeah, basically anyone who plays DF isn't gonna really care for graphics. I use a tileset mainly because I grew up on sprite-based RPGs. I'm right at home with the little tiles. Not so much with the colored letters.

I love the little ASCII characters...  I don't think having a tileset would be the same.

But yeah, I've been wondering about that background myself.  It looks almost like one of the doors from Doom 3, but I don't think that's what it is.

Well, Dwarf Fortress have one of the most beutiful graphics, ASCII-wise. Compare with games like Nethack, which graphics is rather simplistic compared to Dwarf Fortress.

Only problem I had is telling apart creatures at times(Is that g a goat, or a goblin?), which makes me at times consider using a tileset for the beastiry at elast.

Me too.  DF is just that good though.  And I agree with Ailure that these are some of the best ASCII graphics I've ever seen.

Yes, but because they're so pretty and varied, nobody can make decent graphic tilesets because % is both food and part of unseen underground, and O is both a trade depot post and a glass door.

The background reminds me of Space Hulk.

My penmanship is entirely unintelligble but I still feel I can draw pretty decently...

I use the graphics version of nethack.  I can't stand its ASCII display.

But I will never stray from ASCII on DF.  I, for some reason, don't like the tilesets.  Probably just cause that's the way I've been seeing it this whole time, in ASCII, that is.

I like the df graphics because I can play when it's slow at work and it looks almost just like an ssh shell. (I work at a webhosting company)

I recall a long time ago that the background has something to do with Alien and I'm pretty sure someone figured out exactly where it came from.

I'm horrible at forum searches though, and I think it was determined while a thread was spiraling off topic anyway.

P.S. 800X600 curses all the way, no tileset.  I have been conditioned by MUDs and other rougelikes, tilesets just look out of place to me.

The only reference to this that I saw in the forum search was
here.

Seems that even Toady doesn't know for sure where it came from.
