Poking a hole UPWARDS?

Well, making a up-down staircase means I can see down, but cannot see up.

Is their any equivalent for seeing upwards?

i think a ramp may do this.

Regardless, and for this reason, its especially dangerous to dig upwards near the presence of water or magma.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

Dig a down staircase above your up/down staircase.

Ramps will often accomplish this as well.

To dig upwards use up/down staircases with an up at the bottom and a down at the top. Then when you're happy with what you've dug, you can remove the dug out staircases by channeling them out.

I frequently create upwards single tile shafts with a miner, dig out some waterworks, then channel down. It makes the area inaccessable unless you dig another route, but often for water routing I dont want that.

Ramp is the easiest way to accidentally pierce a body of water/magma from below dig upwards.
