How do dwarfs gain Appraiser just by just sitting around?
I bet they hold the "Artifact CaravanShow" when we're not watching

I thought they got appraiser by giving traders the least profit possible.

Really? I've been doing it all wrong this whole time! *seize caravan*

I'm thinking they're actually playing The Price is Right, to train their value-guessing skills.

Yeah, in the future you probably shouldn't strike the earth quite so hard

They gain it by trading. The dwarves you have who have appraiser skill probably arrived with it.

Do dwarves hold classes on non-military skills?

I believe appraiser is based on the first dwarf to look at a caravan of goods. They don't actually have to trade, and it only works for one dwarf per caravan and it is based on some much stuff they look at.

I think you gain appraiser the more times you trade. I make a habit of selecting a cheap low quality product, selecting it, and then offering it for free. That counts as a 'trade' and ups the guy's appraise skill. I'm not certain that's how it works, but you can repeat that (exiting the screen each time) and if your broker doesn't have appraise at the start, after a while he will get the skill and you'll be able to guage item value.

I could be wrong on this I haven't scienced it.

Wiki claims it's the first time a dwarf opens the trade menu.  Thus, you can train an appraiser by sending someone to trade, closing, then sending your real broker to trade, and doing the actual trade.

No.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.
