Now Syria is intervening in Iraq.

Well, common enemy and all that. I wonder if the US intervening will now make it look like we are on the side of Syria? Ah, the joys of being a superpower and everything being a 3D chessboard :P

Obama seeks $500 million to fund moderate Syrian rebels.

Feels a couple of years late if anything. Trying to build up a third option to ISIS or Assad this late in the game seems damned near hopeless, but fingers crossed I'm wrong on that.

In 2012, when moderates were in the majority and defections from the Army were common, that might have tipped the balance and lead to a quick and relatively painless end of the civil war. Now it's just a drop on the hot stone.

Yeah, and as far as I know, he still don't want to give them stuff like MANPADS, giving Assad complete air superiority.

Now I'm certain I'm not understanding something, because how the hell does stuffing your pants help against aircrafts?

I bet these weapons will end up in ISIS hands.

Probably more to do with killing ISIS than actually doing anything in Syria. No American troops need set foot for as long as the rebels do the fighting.

MANPADS are man-portable air-defense systems (Stinger missiles, etc).

So a Caliph walks the Earth once more? Spiffy. Also, their capital, Ar-Raqqah, was the capital of the Abbasing Caliphate from 796 to 809 under Harun al-Rashid. Even more spiffy.

Would multiple Caliphs define a schism? Because I have a feeling that a good majority of Muslims won't accept an extremist caliph.

Though I'm equating a caliph as like a pope, from my understanding, except a heck of a lot weaker.

Don't the sunnis elect a caliph? I kinda doubt they're getting a majority vote any time soon.
