The Ultimate DF Rig
« on: February 11, 2011, 06:40:50 pm »

There have been a few threads in the last year discussing the factors which most heavily impact Dwarf Fortress's FPS. Despite Dwarf Fortress being rendered entirely with ASCII characters, the incredible amount of calculations it performs can bring a modern gaming rig to its knees. The main reason for this is the fact that Dwarf Fortress is single threaded. Most high-end processors these days split their power between two or even four separate cores, meaning DF can access only a fraction of the CPU.

So I thought we should compile all the info we have here, in a single thread. What is the best custom gaming rig to play Dwarf Fortress on? I'll store all the info we manage to scrape together in the next post. BEGIN!

TL; DR: In this thread, we build a hypothetical super-rig for playing DF.

Oh cool another thread that can be summed up with "You need a very good processor".

Oil immersion is such a pain in the ass... I've done two of those type systems now and they're just messy and annoying.

They do stay quite cool though.

Hemm, no, it's not a stupid question. I think an overclocked phenom X2 would be the best choice for your processors, and I think nvidia graphoc card support opengl better. Not sure. I don't know how much your ram latency count and I don't think a better hdd would help you. All I could think for now.

A mousepad with good traction, and a wrist support.

Mousepad?  What is this mouse you speak of?

Anyway, all I can say besides "really good processor" would be making sure you have the fastest memory access available.  The bottleneck on this game is that it just flat-out processes a huge amount of math equations on a huge amount of data.

I think something of this scale would be ideal.

All I know is don't bother getting a six-core for DF, it doesn't help much. First hand experience.
