[triviality] babies are eloquent
« on: April 07, 2008, 09:22:00 pm »

I just had a full conversation with a dwarf baby.  He didn't want to come adventure with me it seems, but he knew who to go ask for quests.

Odd how "Experiment" in DF is often synonymous with "Raging inferno of death and dispair"

I was really upset when Toady decided to not allow children and babies to join you on your adventures, even if they have the personality for it. So much for my Pied-Piper adventurer!

You should be allowed to kidnap them if you have a bag with you. And if Toady ever implements eating killed creatures, might I make a modest proposal...

Anyway. Yes, it is strange that babies can speak properly.

You underestimate the power of the Dwarf.

If you take a pregnant military dwarf with you in adventurer and she gives birth in say... the 6th level of a dank cave swarming with giant cave spiders and other such horrors, the baby will crawl its way out of the cave, traverse the open world for years on end, until settling in some town, buying a nice house, and becoming a local guard for the lord of the land.

I'm not joking.

I'll note it down.  I suppose I need the adventurer to speak in baby talk, and the baby should babble back.

Heeeellooooooo!  Aren't yoooou a hairy baby?  Yes you are!

Oh, is it intended that the baby's mother wasn't carrying it?  This was an abandoned fortress that I revisited in adventure-mode (the invaded goblin fort, particularly).  Mother was still alive, I believe -- at least, baby told me so, carefully detailing all the goblins and dwarves mother had killed, and occasionally telling me about father being quite dead.

Edit: forgot to mention giggling at the idea of dwarf-baby talk.

I much prefere the idea of kidnapping babies and raising them to be your fanatical followers, with success based on social skills... but I suppose adventure mode moves too slowly for that, doesn't it?

Is it strange that I can so easily imagine an infant talking about the death and deaths caused by its parents?
But then, one of the babies in my fort did commit suicide by throwing himself to his death off my 3 z-level deep gobbo arena...

Yeah, all of the childcare AI is turned off in adventure mode.  They don't do a lot of normal things there yet.
