Dorf Names
« on: February 10, 2011, 11:46:18 am »

Everbody has a favourite dwarf name, or a couple dozen. Who doesn't have a few Doris and Noris. Man-names like Bruce especially, and eventually just anything with a -y. Spongy, Grungy, Fluffy etc.

What are some of yours?

I use a modded race with a modded language.  It works well, except one name keeps coming up:

Smellias        I try to pronounce it respectfully, but in my head it always comes up as "smelly ass"

There's others like:  Lad, Ambiti, Andiere, Scora, Tilgara, Wheaver  Which sound not bad.

and:  Gil    which is a real name.

I keep a list personally, mainly derived of Dorfs from Lord of the Rings, and Physics Units. I also use the Greek Alphabet. It's a pathetic way to try and learn passively.

My current expedition leader is called A001
A=firdt migrant wave (aka: embarking seven)
001=dorf#001

(I used this after I saw something like it in some fortress succession fort)

I once had a modded fort race with a custom language. One of the possible name choices was "Vaya", which means "Champion". Every creature I had with that name became military.

I'm fond of Iton. He was my first mayor in a half succsessful fort, and made unreasonable demands untill the place fell apart.

Unfortunately the name for my Big Boss DF expy "Snake Bigleader" came out as the somewhat awkward "Therleth Orear" when I used a dorf translator online. Nevertheless, "Therleth" sounds pretty nice to me.

I name dwarves after the characters (ones you meet & ones you only hear about) from my LP's. Each wave of migrants has names starting with a differend letter. On embark i go with names like Almalexia, Axle or Amauntor. First migrants get Balthazar, Bigboss & co.. et cetera.

I remember running out of names at "V" migrant wave, so i named a male dwarf Vandysagina. Oh well  :o

edit : Before you ask, Yes, he became a legendary champion

In my first fort, most of my useful dwarfs (smiths, masons) were named 'monom'

I usually Adventure Guy as a name because of the forum game. I also use the seven deadly sins, and names from books that I liked reading.

usually I don't nickname all my dwarves and just give them custom professions.

All Delers and (I forget what iron is. Datan?)s go straight to the military. Or the forges, if I have enough militiadorfs (i.e. never).
