Story:
The fortress of Flamegate is located in a mountain pass between its Dwarven civilization and goblin enemies. The founders came to the volcano with plans for a superweapon to destroy any invading goblin army. Sieges were very common during the fort's first few years.

Technical:
The pump stack "Magma Core" that I built in the volcano is less powerful than Vattic's, but the output can be directed to almost any location outside with the pull of a lever. 82 iron pumps, using 1140 power, draw magma from 35z of volcano pipe to the surface at a constant speed. The potential ammo is ~14000 tiles of 7/7 magma, meaning that I can fire constantly for about 5 in-game days. As seen in the above image, a few seconds of firing can easily kill an ambush/siege squad. The blob of magma in the above image spread out to cover the caravan road, even though the weapon was turned off at the time I took the screenshot. All goblins died.

See the whole design for yourself:

The next time a siege comes, I am going to try to kill all of them in under a minute.

HOLY SHIT!

...that's all I can say, except that I must now perform this without a naturally occurring vent.

Damn you. Now I have to build one and I hate dealing with pump stacks. On the plus side, magma.

...that's all I can say, except that I must now perform this without a naturally occurring vent.

"The trick" is that a fully submerged pump stack can fire constantly until it runs out of ammo, whereas a pump stack that only draws from the top or sides of a magma container/sea has to wait for natural flow to replace the gap at the pump inlet. DF pumps can move fluids faster than they can fall naturally.

Wouldn't you need to build an external pump stack in order to refill your artifical magma pipe?

The vent I am using, when completely drained, takes 1.5 years to naturally refill completely. I drained the magma into the second and third caverns in order to build the pump stack.

Wow, I love your sleeping quarters!

seriously, if ASCII's diagonal walls looked that good I'd build them like yours too.

A pesky group of kobolds were looting the remains of a caravan that they had ambushed earlier outside my fort to the northwest. I decided to power up the weapon to exterminate them when suddenly "A vile force of darkness has arrived!".

Conveniently for me, the goblins decided to huddle around the spot where the last kobold warrior fell...

All goblin siege squad leaders confirmed killed. Some mooks may have escaped off the map edge, no worry.

You should really try and get this set up with pressure plates and bridges, to allow for automated defenses and caging in.  You could very well wipe out the goblin civ just by exterminating their sieges!

I'm glad you took inspiration from me. I've enjoyed your topics before. I tried to make a trap where I had regularly spaced vents on the surface like yours but could only open one at a time. Stacking the pumps in the magma pipe was originally a solution I thought up to solve that problem.

You already got more replies than my topic but I'm not jealous, honest.

I don't know about the rest of you nuts, but I don't consider "covers one, very wide radius" "aimable." Not that a wide radius is a bad thing, of course.
