Ortus Regni a free digital version of the board game from the game publisher themselves.

It's a card game set in Anglo-Saxon England. The game supports both single player and multiplayer (though I haven't tried the later) and it's generally fairly relaxed and not overly complex. It supports up to 4 (iirc) players/bots with the number of players having a big effect on the game's dynamics even on the lowest difficulty.

You can design your deck from the get go allowing you good amount of flexibility regarding play style/strategies be it straight military might, diplomacy, political intrigue, gambling or a mix of those.

Thanks a lot for pointing me to this excellent card game.

It has a good depth with several ways to win, the training is very well done as it is a mini-campaign with each chapter going through a key game mechanic to help you understand the concepts and rules better.

There are offline AI opponents too that knows how to play, very good for people like me not interested in the online part of this game.

It takes a few games to start getting used to the rules (right click on any card to learn what it can do) but once you're understanding what's going on, it is fantastic.

Don't underestimate the importance of sending more emissary to the vikings, after some time they are strong enough to become game ending threat.
I was playing with 3 AI on a free for all using one of the stock deck (that had no emissary card) , and the last remaining AI finally kicked my sorry earldom by getting the vikings to attacking me in force while i was on my last lands (as i resisted that AI previous attempt to invade by repelling its own army) :D

You are welcome  :)

Yes, the Vikings are a very fun mechanic and I won my first game (outside of the tutorial) with their help. I ‘m not sure if that deck has any vassals but you can send them to the Vikings too, though they are not as effective as the emissaries. Church control is also very fun when the ai battle each other and you get the “church decides battle” card.

To me it looked like yeat another so-called "tutorial" that adamantly refuses both to actually explain anything to you and to allow you to do ANYTHING yourself ("Click there. Now, click there. No-no, i will not let you quit the game!"). So i did quit immediately.  :P Second is bad enough for me, anyways.
Also the table is so goddamn zoomed out, that i make out which card is which mostly by general colors(probably exagerrating a bit. A bit).
Probably will look closer into it, though.

In news that isn't jokes, Hitman 2 has the first level and the tutorial temporarily free on Steam.

It's a stealth exploration game, where you have to figure out the best way to kill a person. Then you do it again in another, stupider way, because it's entertaining.

downsides: temporary, online-only (DRM, but it's already Steam)

Area 51 is free, there's a legal copy on moddb, but you need to search around for the 1.2 US patch in order to get it running. I'll post links if I ever get it working

I just read that the good open source clone of Minecraft, Minetest 5.0.0 has been finally released :
https://www.minetest.net/downloads/
changelog since last release :
https://dev.minetest.net/Changelog

No idea if mods and subgames are all up to date for this new release (at the time i write i imagine the heavy majority aren't) or if you're going to have to wait for a bit until each dev update their work(as the default subgame shipped with Minetest is a bit bare bone, to enjoy Minetest you really need mods or a different subgame ).

This is... bizarre... A game that not only supports mods, but builds them into the core of the game and even the concept of the game... I didn't even think I'd never see the day, the idea never occurred to me

For what i played i had taken a liking of the Lord of the Test subgame , lot of content, danger and locations to get into :
https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=5578
From what i read it is not updated to this new version of the Minetest engine yet, on their github their last commit was in january so i imagine they'll still update it at some point for the new version.

There's a subgame that try to clone Minecraft as much as it can if you wish to play something that is more similar to it :
https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?t=16407
The developper of it is very active so it should be updated soon enough

After that when it comes to mods if you wish to play with the default subgame that comes with Minetest, there are so much very different stuff that it's hard to make suggestions as it's really to each their own, but i think the most important mod to give those world the game generate a bit more life is the Mob_Redo mod that had some wildlife/monsters.
https://forum.minetest.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9917
Without this one the default subgame really feel so empty.

Of course you can also join on the many servers if you wish to play in MP, every servers have their set of mods so you'll get a different experience.

This is... bizarre... A game that not only supports mods, but builds them into the core of the game and even the concept of the game... I didn't even think I'd never see the day, the idea never occurred to me

technically Minetest is only an engine, but to give something for players to actually play it is shipped with a default subgame named "Minetest Game" , but as said it's rather bare bone (less things to do and discover than its obvious inspiration Minecraft by example), so either downloading a much better and complete subgame made by someone else or downloading one of the many many mods to improve this default "Minetest Game" is recommended

Missed the news about it but you can get a free copy of Morrowind until the 31 march if you create a bethesda account and probably have to get their launcher too whatever it does because apparently everything need a launcher nowadays, i guess data farming is really making a lot of money.
