Not really a Steam clone, you do not need GoG galaxy open or such to play the games.

Is that the only difference then? You don't need the game buying/downloading/chat/achievement/networking interface open to play (DRM free) games downloadable from said interface? Damn you're right. It's not a steam clone at all.

No, you literally do not need for galaxy. All games are downloadable directly from their site. You get, depending on the wise of the game, 1-many zip files that contain the game from their website. You can then do whatever you want with them. The gig galaxy software merely streamlines the downloading and installation of the files.
