instant rot
« on: March 31, 2007, 04:41:00 am »

In my new fortress(teryfieng glacier) i just started with, i dug a 3x3 area to quicky dump all my barrels of turtle in so they are easier to defend, so after i designate the pile i check all of my barrels to see if everything is stored properly and i was suprised to find alot of XXTurteXX and other completely useless junk.

The fort had been going for 10 seconds and its entire food supply was gone.

Also, how do you get rotten food out of barrels so they can be used to put non-rotten food in?

Those aren't rotten, they're "worn", like the old, tattered equipment of skeletons that have inhabited ancient ruins for centuries. Still edible, by dwarven standards.
I've never played on a glacier map, but I've heard one or two players say that their food became XXfoodXX very fast there, presumably due to the harsh cold.

Rotten, worn or abducted by aliens, my dwarves dont eat it and it still takes up barrel space.

How does a turtle become tattered by being in a barrel on a glacier for 5 seconds?

I don't know of any food that spoils IRL from extreme cold, tbh.

It froze. Did the alcohol do this too?

Freezer burn!

Seriously, before the food rots completely away, try cooking it. I've heard that cooking rotting food "resets" the freshness, although I can't confirm this from direct observation. (Maybe the Cook will cover the rotting stench with ketchup and then the dwarves will eat it...)

Well, if he covers the half-rotten meat with some half-rotten mushrooms, and sprinkles some half-rotten spices on them, he miraculously makes an unrotten meal!
