Why do goblins have trolls?
« on: February 26, 2011, 09:46:02 pm »

What in the raws makes it so goblins automatically get pet trolls?  Trolls don't have any pet or domestic tags on them at all.  Is it hardcoded, or is there something I'm missing?

A combination of [USE_CAVE_ANIMALS] and [USE_EVIL_ANIMALS]. Trolls have the [EVIL] tag, and they live in caverns.

Interesting.  Other than trolls, subterranean creatures aren't evil or good tagged, are they?

Would the same sort of thing be possible with [GOOD] tags?

Doesn't it have something to do with the [PET] and [PET_EXOTIC] tag as well?

Trolls don't have either of those.

So we could have elves riding unicorns and stuff if we wanted?

I think it's the way towns develop now. In the beginning, people move into a town. Then they start producing tables, which results in more and more tables. Soon tables represent a significant portion of the population, they start lobbying for new laws and regulations, putting people to greater and greater disadvantage...
Link for full quote. 'tis mighty funny.

There's plenty evil down there, but only in cavern layers 2 and beyond. Cavern animal use is restricted to layer 1, and trolls are the only ones at that layer in vanilla. There is one good cavern creature, the gorlak, which is found in layers 1 through 3.

Would the same sort of thing be possible with [GOOD] tags?
Presumably yes, and such an entity should be able to use gorlaks.

Theoretically, elves should be able to use unicorns already, but I'm not sure if they do.

yup to the both of these. i've given dwarves the ability to use evil and good animals, and always wind up with trolls as an embark option, often gorlaks and even gremlins as embarkable pets, too. without adding nodrink, though, the latter two are bloody annoying, their kids always dying of thirst, even on top of murky pools

I'm not sure about pulling levers, but every time I've embarked with gremlins, they came as hunters and would immediately grab a crossbow and quiver if they were available. I did not see them hunt (just die of thirst >_<), and I cannot remember if I brought ammunition, which would have affected their ability to do so.

Huh, really?  Well, they DO have the Ambusher skill...  If you make them require no food and/or drink, they should hunt for you fancy-like :D

none of my pet gremlins have ever pulled a lever, and every single one embarked with was a hunter and came fully loaded with clothes, a quiver of 25 bolts, and a crossbow. never seen them hunt, but they *do* attack things that scare them or attack them. undead, usually, though one did take down a unicorn that approached it while it was drinking

and hey, if they die of thirst, free stuff to sell to the next caravan. of course, those born at your site don't start with clothes...
