If anyone gets it in their heads that it would be cool to live real close to a real active volcano, remember that the fumes erode your TEETH.

True, but teeth aren't necessary for metalworking.

Actually, being calcareous, they could potentially serve as a very limited amount of flux stone...

hmmm... I wonder if that's actually true.  If it is, we might want to suggest that shells and bones could be used as flux in a pinch.  You'd have to use like 3 or so to do the work of 1 chunk of limestone...

EDIT:  Ok, shells yes, bones and teeth no.  Seems like you'd need a lot of shells.  Probably why they don't seem to have ever been used for the purpose.  At least, not directly.
