Because if it is the one I am thinking of, it is the one who did a lot of work in magic and alchemy.

He did a lot of alchemy and theology, yes.  He's more well known for his work in creating the Laws of Motion (they've been superceded by General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics, but they still work pretty well for modelling everyday events), on gravity and on light.

No authenticated portrait of Robert Hooke exists, a situation sometimes attributed to the heated conflicts between Hooke and Isaac Newton. In Hooke's time, the Royal Society met at Gresham College, but within a few months of Hooke's death Newton became the Society's president and plans were laid for a new meeting place.
