I used to roll on RMN, and Avatars meant nothing. There was a "let Craze decide your avatar" thread. I think mine is still two guys covered in paint from some music video I never watched. So, I was use to having it  stated in someones introduction thread thing that doesn't happen around here. but, we are to talk about all the creepy east coast hillblillies of Innsmouth and Dunwitch, are we not?

I haven't read any of the stuff other than lovecraft's. An suggestions as to where else to turn?

I'd avoid August Derleth's works (other than Lurker at the Threshold, which they sort of co-authored). He's like the Brian Herbert of the Lovecraft Mythos (except he's not Lovecraft's son, which makes it even worse). Derleth was hugely important in getting Lovecraft's stuff published after his death, but he took a few too many liberties with some of the "unfinished" works.

If you haven't read them, Lovecraft's Dream Cycle stuff (Quest for Unknown Kadath, The Silver Key, and a few others) are a good read. Less horrific and more of a pulp fantasy stuff in the vein of R.E. Howard or Lord Dunsany (both of whom were friends' of Lovecraft's).

Robert Bloch (of Psycho fame) was sort of a protege of Lovecraft's and wrote some pretty good stuff that is considered canon (such as "The Shambler From the Stars").

Some other writers that have done stuff in the Mythos: Lin Carter, Ramsey Campbell, Brian Lumley, Fred Chappell (who I had the great fortune to have as an English professor in college -- great guy).
