fantastic alchemists
« on: March 06, 2011, 09:50:56 am »

after getting a grasp for the new reaction tags, i am working on a alchemists mod right now.

what i already have:
  • mill brimstone, saltpeter and coal into blackpowder (already used in my thunderbluss mod to make bullets)
  • an alchemists workshop using glas vials etc
  • create saltpeter out of pearlash bars at the alchemists workshop (kinda refining the product even more, make saltpeter easier obtainable for my thunderbluss mod)
  • create brimstone and calcite out of plaster powder (kinda splitting the gypsum into its basics: Caclite and Sulfur, again help for my thunderbluss mod)
  • turn lead into gold(very well known alchemists reaction from medivial times, at least a few claimed they know how to do it ^^)
  • turn silver into tin(helps with bronze making from tetrahydrite, using similar looking metals was also an aimed reaction in medivial)
  • turn granite into iron(stone to iron also wildly used)

what i am looking for now is more ideas and maybe include herbs,etc. into the above metal reactions. so for example to have actuall uses of the various plant and animal extracts (like true alchemists of course). like gnomeblight, golden salve, various venoms, etc. maybe the new nut paste, create new plants that hold paste and/or oil. the possibilties are endless, so many i cant think of one ^^

I cant help but feel that this mod would be incomplete without there being an occasional catastrophic event in the alchemists workshops :P

Its alchemy, so everything goes.

Add a reaction that uses a random gem, clear glass, ash and a flux and creates a glass like material that can be used for weapons and armor and is on par (or almost as good as) with steel.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Or one that uses obsidian, blood (thats possible, right?) and ash to create "Blood of Armok", another high quality weapon material.

Or material transformations.
3 silvers = 1 gold
3 copper = 1 iron
and so on.

Production of Pain Killers for use during surgery would be nice,  if present dwarf get 10% better chacne of success or soemthing to that effect.  Also the production of wound cleansing agents from herbs or honey which again goes some way to effecting how quickly the patient heals.

Hm..

What about production of arsenic from orpiment, realgar and cobaltite (at some risk of poisoning the alchemist, of course)? Also, cobalt from cobaltite during the same process. Not sure for the exact uses, but these would be my ideas:

Arsenic:
* Weak poison. Might work better against (giant) insects.
* Baths for the nobles.
* Arsenical bronze
* Alloyed with lead for harder bullets

Cobalt:
* Blue glass ("smalt")

Bonus points for having a "create vermin" reaction which has a 90% chance of creating this. Extra bonus points for having several types of "explodium" which cause rapid necrosis in specific body parts (such as right arms, left legs, guts, or eyes).

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

A nice thing to add would be that each alchemical reaction has some necrosis (severity 1, to make it slow)

Alchemistst who make black powder get a small chance of making explodium, which has a fixed temp of 20001 and a boiling point of 20000 (like an explosion in the workshop :D)

Alchemists who make gold eventually get rotting eyes.

Alchemists who create iron eventually get rotting hands.

Alchemists who create tin eventually get rotting lungs.

Sort of like FullMetalAlchemist, you need to pay a toll for transmutation.

Um, I can buy the small chance of explosion when making gunpowder, but why would gold transmutation rot your eyes? No way, jose.

Thinking about it a bit more, one possible reaction would be:

Cinnabar -> Mercury (multiple vials, maybe?)

Mercury + Silver, Gold or Tin -> Amalgam

Amalgam can then be used for plating (by fire gilding) objects with one of the metals dissolved in mercury. Might work a bit like glazing does right now; or it could be simple a way to make valuable mirrors ...

A.) Can't you make it so that htere's a, say, 5% chance of explodium?
B.) Lesee...Turning iron into steel or steel into cotton candy? Turning clay (31.19+) into literal cotton candy? I dunno.

research high grade steel - takes iron, flux and coal and has a 10 percent chance of creating a metal called "high grade steel" which is somewhat better than steel and a 1 percent chance of creating a "high grade steel knowledge slab", which can be used in a regular smelter to produce high grade steel at a 100 percent chance

the same for other alloys, like high grade bronze, or other made up alloys

the idea isn't mine, but i can't recall the original creator to properly credit him

edit: i think i found it
