Games like "Europa 1400 : The Guild" ?
« on: March 07, 2011, 01:24:39 pm »

Hello!

I'm looking for a game (games) similiar to Europa 1400 : The Guild and, ofcourse, it's sequel "The Guild 2". Political-Backstab-Economic with elements of rpg.. In both you could accomplish your goals in truckloads of differend ways! Listing possible ways to accomplish any task would take far too long, and that's exactly the type of game i'm looking for!

Since Europa 1400 isn't a known game, this is how it goes :
I started the game as an alchemist, with just one worker, a terrible house and some gold. After enduring robbers, blackmailing and unpredictable market prices, i managed to buy out one of other alchemist workshops in town, leaving only one. Which i harrassed for years with sabotage, mugging and buying out all ingridients. At the same time i was befriending, bribing, blackmailing or killing people to help me rise as one of government figures, an unsignificant spy, but still a good start.

Once i established monopoly on alchemical goods (except for imports from other countries) i could turn my eyes to other fronts. My rivals couldn't get valuable potions (that greatly help in gameplay, but are hard to make) and had to resort to illegal activities to accomplish some of their goals, but that only helped me get evidence against them. I falsified some, influenced some high ranked friends to change some laws, and the crime list quickly piled up.

Married the town judge, and romanced guard captain and a wealthy mine owner...

The list goes on. My character, who lived over 100 years thanks to very rare, and very expensive faust elixirs (monopoly on alchemy!) who lost all his children to a deadly curse, who was frequently attacked by much fitter enemies, who had trouble maintaining monopoly on alchemist goods due to world traders taking more interest in our city..
Eventualy he owned half the buildings in the city, beign ran by his minions (because he didn't have the required knowledge to run, for example, a graveyard), became marshall of the empire forces and the major at the same time, controlled the entire market with dozens of his traders, killed one of his opponents in a duel - cheated - sentenced one to death for crimes she didn't commit - and caused another powerful family to die out, due to..

well , you get what Guild is about.

Regards

The Guild was great, the second less so but still fun. Unfortunately I haven't heard of any similar games so i can't help you.
Speaking of that, I'm inclined to play TG2 again as the first time was bug riddled. Which expansions/patch/mods would give the best experience?

I only played the vanilla guild 2, which was much less complex and rewarding than guild 1, but i've heard that g2 : reneissance expansion is a huge improvement which everyone should get.

I am aware that the guild was one of a kind.. But maybe something similiar did exist.. somewhere..  :-\ ?

Then again, I consider Infinity to be overly ambitious, something that might easily spell it's downfall.

Sims? I'll see what becomes of it, but if i'll still have to babysit everyone and tell them to eat otherwise they starve - no.

In terms of intrigue and the like you may love the hell out of crusader kings. Scheming to acquire inheritance or crusading as a paragon of virtue are both quite fun.
I've never played the first guild, only the second and I liked it. Is there any place to buy/download the first one that anyone would recommend?

I am playing CK at the moment, while it's nice, you have almost no options aside from assasinations, marriage and war.

But most of all the AI is poor. My County of Mazovia turned into Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania by 1119.

As much as I hate the evil empire that is EA, I preordered this a while back.
Sure I hate EA, but I certainly dosnt hate ALL their games.

Machiavelli the Prince maybe?

Trade, politics, scheming and war. It's a bit dated but can still be fun.

Well, hope you don't hate the Sims, cause for any wonderous concept out there, they always manage to find a way to dumb it down to Sims level. I forgot about that for a second when reading the feature list. Then I saw a gameplay video and remembered.

I don't hate the sims, just hate the fact that they put DLCs up for cash.
And I really hate the idea of In-game bonuses for preorders.
What about those people who cannot preorder?
That is discrimination at some level.
But the actual games? Nope, don't hate them at all.
