The Arena Mode test v3
« on: March 09, 2011, 11:58:19 am »

Shortly after DF2010 was released, Ringmaster and then LordSlowpoke hosted an arena tournament known as The Arena Mode test.  http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=54069.msg1160259  Participants could choose for fighters any creature available in the object arena and equip them with items and skills.

I've tweaked the system used in v2, and introduced the material and tissue changes from the genesis mod as well as a few changes of my own.

RULES

You can choose to have one fighter. This fighter can be chosen from any of the choices available in the Object Testing Arena of DF2010 (EXCEPT Megabeasts/semimegabeasts). Please use the following form to request a fighter:

SPECIES

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Due to the strength difference of different creatures, a tier system is being set up.

TIERS (starting points)

500:  Bunnies
200:  Gremlins, Dark Gnomes
150:  Kobolds, Carp
100:  Animalmen, dwarves, elves, humans, goblins
80:  Werewolves, Giant Cave Spider
50:  Minotaur, troll, yeti, nightwing, ironman, ogre
Tier Megabeast (Prohibited):  All mega- and semimega- beasts

If you choose one of the creatures not listed in a tier, consider it to be with the 100 point creatures. A creature will be moved from this tier if a fighter is created and is noticed to be a particularly awesome badass or weak pushover.

To create your fighter, a points system will be used. It'll be very similar to the one used in Adventurer Mode. Check TIER section for more details on a creature's number of starting points.

120 points sounds like a lot, but it turns out to be just enough to get a full set of copper equipment and a few skill levels.  Or a naked grandmaster with a nice weapon.

This was the amount given in v2, but I did lower the cost of some things, so a lower amount might be better.

At 100 points you could get a full copper set with no skills or a grandmaster with a crappy weapon.  Or something in between.

I'll sketch out a design for an arena and send it to you either tonight or tomorrow.  I'll have to give the arena setup a little thought.

I ran some tests with the sample dwarf vs. the sample giant cave spider.  Even without adding in the canlearn tag, the giant cave spider managed to take out the dwarf 2/5 times.  Couldn't get a bite through the copper armor, but the winning spiders grabbed limbs, broke them, and then strangled the dwarves.  The fights though took a long, long time.  I'm definately going to back the amount of points off.  Maybe down to 80.  At that level, beginning gladiators will have significant weaknesses to make for quicker fights

After some thought, these are the things I would like in an arena.

1.  An open area without danger of magma, drowning, or falling into a pit.
2.  A platform, maybe 5*5, on a pillar above a 3 z level pit.  The pit floor area would be something like 15*15 if the pillar was a solid 5*5 all the way up, but it could be smaller if the pillar supporting the platform were a single tile.  I could then fill said pit with magma, water, or rabid foxes.
3.  A box.  That is, a normal size gladiator room with a roof on top.  Only 1 z level inside to take away any advantage flight might give.
4.  Some sort of maze, or pathlike area, so that I can do a semiguided challenge.  Maybe like 8 small rooms with a winding path connecting them, so that you can't see from room to room.
5.  An area like this

As an exhibition match, I'm going to be doing a fight between an 80 pt version of Urist McIrish
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

vs.

A crazed werewolf inspired by the Spartans of 300. Except with two shields and a lot more hair.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

A link to the movie:
http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-2316-exhibition

Highlights were copper buckler to the head x 100, copper buckler to the gut, the werewolf biting and shaking the elf, and the elf eventually suffocating in what I can only assume was her own blood.  I don't think she even got to swing a sword.

Well, you came in about right for the 120 level, but I think Tolyk was right that that was too high.

After some thought, these are the things I would like in an arena.

1.  An open area without danger of magma, drowning, or falling into a pit. Easy.
Fairly easy.
3.  A box.  That is, a normal size gladiator room with a roof on top.  Only 1 z level inside to take away any advantage flight might give.
 Fairly Easy.
4.  Some sort of maze, or pathlike area, so that I can do a semiguided challenge.  Maybe like 8 small rooms with a winding path connecting them, so that you can't see from room to room. Hmm a bit harder, but OK.
5.  An area like this
*snip* Very easy. Closed or open?
Walled in open area - done.
Suspended platform - will take a bit.
Arena with roof - done.
Maze - will do.
Side-by-side fights - open top or roofed?

Anything else that you think might be interesting?
Checkerboard danger room, flooding chamber (water/lava source at side), catwalk, archery range.
