I'm trying very hard to give them the benefit of the doubt, but so far my attempts to accept their free game have resulted in proclamations that I'm not allowed to sue them or make porn of their works. I'm fairly certain they can't stop either one, but it's pretty disheartening that they'd try.

There was some controversy a while back bout it poking around in files that it logically shouldn't have access to, or some such thing.

It poked around with steam files, which it shouldn't be doing. The main concern you should have is that Epic had a leak regarding Fortnite accounts, which are now the same thing as Epic accounts, a while back meaning it could happen once more.

In short, it's going through all your Steam files and browser stuff - probably to help with marketing and the like.

Secondly, it's their practice of doing exclusives on their platform. Metro Exodus got pulled a few days before it was meant to go live on Steam to make it an Epic store exclusive, and they've done that with a number of other games (the new Anno game for instance). They first said that they had learnt their lesson and they'd stop doing it after they were getting a lot of flak for it...but then did it again a short time after and said that they decided they'd continue doing exclusives.

I get all free games on Epic. But you can do it without the launcher, on the site. Or use a Mac if you're paranoid about epic and not apple. Or a VM.

Or you could just not even give them the time of day. If they're having so much trouble with security, it's likely only a matter of time until account log-ins get stolen as well. If that happens you can wave bye-bye to your free games.

I've also heard that they don't (or at one point didn't) require email authentication for new accounts. People would attempt to make new accounts only to discover that their email addresses had already been used. But that might just have been a rumor.

Which would be a bit silly, since if someone else used your email as their login to buy games, then you could request a password reset via email and get all their games.

I'm hearing a lot of vague rumors and reddit conspiracy theorists in the case against Epic Games here. Meanwhile, the massive Fortnite audience all use this launcher every time they play, and pretty much every major gaming news agency is scrutinizing their activity religiously. If there was some major security flaw or privacy issue, I'm pretty sure it would have made the headlines by now, and yet I've heard nothing.

Personally, I've had the Epic Games launcher running continuously for well over a year now. I monitor it in Task Manager regularly and have never noticed outstanding processor usage. Network use spiked occasionally when I first started using it and it decided to update games in the background, but a quick look at the settings allowed me to disable this and I've had no Network use issues since. I enjoy the free games, and I've enjoyed playing several exclusives. Epic Games does lack a few features that Steam has, but I can find reviews and forums elsewhere, so it's not that big of a deal. Overall I'm generally satisfied with my experience using this launcher.

I just wish I didn't miss out on the free Subnautica and Ashen.  My roommate got both of those and they looked pretty fun.

I wonder how long they are going to keep up the free game thing.  I'd think its got to be costing them a fair bit to do that.

There are suspicions and, yes, outright conspiracy theories that have escalated to the point where testimonials of safety are denied or otherwise twisted into an interpretation that fits with the assumption of "Epic Games Launcher is probably evul spyware" (take a look at the response to Folly's post above me).

I'd think that would cost them a fair bit, but they still seem to be alive and all.
