Well, I'm not sure what disease kills after contact...  Normally, inhaling something dangerous is a trouble, but if you get the corpse away then it should be fine.  You'll have a cold or a fever, but nothing major.  Leaving the corpse to sit and rot in the dining hall would make things worse, eventually leading to pneumonia and killer flu.  Basically, the amount of contact decides the severity of syndromes.  The game lacks this right now, one splash of FB blood is as deadly as bathing in it.

After the killer flu thing, it should lead to something EXTREME. Like Ebola or Anthrax. I'm talking rotting flesh sliding off weakened bones style extreme.

I think major earthquakes should make cracks leading down to the caverns.

What about getting different races to join your fort?

What about ancient ruins of other civs? That would be fun to look around for artifacts.

Maybe as an extension of the call for aid and hero possibilities, what if an envoy shows up asking for military aid? You could send your dwarves off (making them inaccessable for a time). When (or if) they come back, they'll have correspondedly higher military stats, maybe even become legendary or, if it was your home civ that came a-calling, champions. They could even come home with spoils of war, rewards, or just things they fould along the way.

Army Arc is already planning things like that, with the ability to send your troops abroad on long-range missions.  They can come back wounded, higher-skilled, with spoils, with prisoners perhaps, or maybe even rescued civilians.

As an extension to the old hermit idea. Sometimes, but rarely, the hermit, if he is human or elf, happens to be a wizard. Then, instead of digging a small room in the mountain, he quickly builds a tower (or another megaconstruction) on the top of a mountain and lives in it.
If he is a good wizard then he is harmless (if not provoked). He always helps in defending fortress and may heal dwarves, even such serious cases as loss of legs, hands or eyes. Оccasionally he produces enchanted items (very good swords, armor, etc), but for some reason keeps them only for himself, so the only way to obtain them is to kill him, but he really hard to kill.
If he is an evil wizard, then he is a human necromancer raising undead minions. He may be hostile, but as well he may not and will start a conversational screen with proposition of alliance - dwarves will supply him with corpses of their fallen comrades and of who attack your fortress, so he could raise more undead and would send some of his undead minions to help the dwarves to defeat their enemies. Rejecting his proposition will result in him becoming hostile and accepting it - war with all elven, some human and some dwarven civilizations. The wizard then starts behaving like a noble, sometimes making demands and there will be a several squads of undead at your side and you get all the loot from the hostiles they kill, because the wizard is interested only in corpses. Siding with him also may decrease dwarven mood for a few months or years until they get used to him and the new migrants will arrive being in an unhappy mood. The wizard also may help you to get rid of ghosts in your fortress and will sometimes kill your cats for his dark rituals. He is also a legendary bone carver, he cannot be controlled, but may create skull totems and other nasty things as a gesture of his good will.

Great ideas, y'all.

Some more:
Priests: A member of some religion comes to your fort and asks for some raw materials and (depending on fortress wealth) perhaps goblets, vestments, and such. If their demands are met, they will start recruiting unhappy dwarves, who will gain happiness  but lose some productivity. However, the mere presence of a church will boost happiness in the fort. Denying them will make some dissatisfied-with-life dwarves less happy, and worse responses  (magma) will likely lead to a crusade against your fort.
Similar events might occur with your own entity's religions, except that more dwarves would attend services/get angry if they are turned down and will be less likely to siege your fort.
Cargo Kobold Cult: If your fortress has a sufficiently complicated/valuable device/item/artifact, local animalmen/kobolds (not necessarily local)/uncivilized sentients will be drawn to it and worship the device/item. They will gather their own food and defend the item/device, and might also otherwise act in the interest of the fort, but other races may not like it...
Foreign Immigrants: Some migrants from a civ that is not on bad terms with yours and has had good trading with your fort arrive. Simple.
The Circus-Not that one!: A group of bards, troubadours, performers, and fools come to your fort. Some ask to stay, and some dwarves (ones with more social skills than useful ones, or that have been spending most of their recent time idling) will ask to leave. Performers will also ask for room and board and boost the happiness of nearby dwarves. Performers being harmed will give dwarves extra unhappy thoughts.

"A land in need-A diplomat, tradesman and some soldiers will arrive to your fort and request that you let them walk around and take stuff from your fort because they need it and ar at war with someone or something. If you say no then you risk causing war between you and them."

How is refusing to give away your stuff an act of war?

In that case, I think there could be a special kind of screen were they sow what they have taken and you could take SOME tings back. Also, Wouldn't they die if they went after the blue lollipop. And again, Don't we like bugs like this?

I added a lot of stuff. Note: All new stuff is always at the bottom of the civ/natural list.
