The Great Interstellar Artifact Hunt - An RTD of Corporate Competition

The idea of the game is such - you play not as human beings, but as evil/greedy/altruistic/visionary/pragmatic/etc. corporate entities of interstellar proportions bent on finding ancient abandoned (or not entirely abandoned, or not entirely ancient, or not entirely either) alien installations and ransacking them as much as possible for any useful knick-knacks and gewgaws to further your own unethical/visionary/profitable research in order to realize your evil/greedy/altruistic/visionary/pragmatic corporate agenda or ideology, if applicable.

To create your very own corporation, submit the following information:

Name: something catchy, something impressive, something mundane - the name of your corporation can be anything you please. It will be on all your products, and by this name you will be known to the public.

CEO: the CEO is your avatar in the emerging narrative as well as the face of the company, though you as the player's powers extend further than that (namely, you fulfill the part of the board of directors, the research department, mission control and hidden manipulator). Give a name and a short description of his/her personality.

Corporate Ideals: how would you describe your corporation in a few sentences? What are its goals? How would you describe the work ethic and environment? Do you have an execution chamber for disobedient employees? Do you lock them up in their cubicles for months on end to prevent information leaks? That kind of thing.

Area of Specialization: you as a corporation can choose one of several areas of specialization:

• Biotech: increased chances of personnel recovering from wounds post-mission, cheaper biotech research and cheaper science personnel.
• Private Military Contractor: cheaper military tech and personnel, starts with free military vessel, research more expensive.
• Military Research: cheaper military research and science personnel.
• Crazy Cult Front: all personnel half-priced, personnel more resilient both physically and mentally, research is far more expensive.
• Consumer Goods and Services: consumer-oriented research is cheaper, such research gives more benefit.
• Robotics: robots are cheaper, robotics research is cheaper.
• Communications and Information Technology: information gathering is cheaper, can obtain more information about sites beforehand.
• Entertainment: schmucks are free, as are two technicians (cameramen) and one specialist (the host) of your choice. More expensive research.
• Banking: 50% more Resource Points, very little researching ability.
• And more, depending on what seems like a good idea at the time.

Corporate Integrity: you start at 10 points. This is essentially the "health" of your corporate entity. When it reaches 0, your corporation disintegrates and goes bankrupt, all of your assets (including your labs and all of their files) are auctioned off to interested buyers - your competitors. 1 point of Corporate Integrity can be converted to 100 Resource Points for your artifact acquisition initiatives and vice versa. This is useful to keep in mind.

Whenever you get a lead on cool places from intrepid space explorers (or, more often, intrepid space exploring probes), you can send your personnel to commence some glorious looting, at which point a mission begins. In a mission, each corporation commands a team of 5-20 personnel of varying expendability.

Personnel Types:

• Schmucks: very cheap, but essentially lacking in any useful skills. Enlisted corporate drones, usually.
• Scientists: expensive, but they are the only ones who can manipulate alien artifacts. Can be medics at an additional cost.
• Soldiers: moderately priced, can skillfully operate military hardware.
• Technicians: more pricy than soldiers, though cheaper than scientists - can operate and repair sophisticated equipment of many kinds. Can also optionally be medics.
• Robots: very expensive, though they are stronger, tougher and more easily repairable than humans. Additionally, they can be improved with military, technical and medical programming at an additional cost.
  

Each corporation has a number of Resource Points that it can allocate to its acquisition initiatives at any point. Each (except Banking, which has more) starts with 500 Resource Points to outfit their away teams with, and this amount can change with research, asset allocation and inter-corporation deals.

Also, any employee who is not a robot can advance in their skills upon performing a task with exceptional skill and ability - say, a schmuck who makes a running jump across a ravine filled with lava while carrying a valuable alien artifact or a scientist who manages to make an ancient alien computer system submit to his will may gain a level, gaining either greater proficiency in their existing skills or entirely new skills altogether (though these will relate to what they did to gain their level). Also, when an employee advances from Level 1 to Level 2, they gain a regularly used name and become slightly less expendable.

Research can proceed in a great many directions:

• Biotech: medical advances and personal augmentation, mostly - make better people today!
• Military: armament of all kinds to destroy and obliterate aliens and competitors alike!
• Consumer: the practical mass applications of your technology - this allows your corporation to gain more Resource Points. Granted, you will be turning alien artifacts into improved coffee machines, but what else are they good for?
• Robotics: the improvement of your robotic minions and tools to perform more complex tasks more efficiently and supplant humans in increasingly more ways!
• Information Technology: knowledge to build better eyes in the sky to find yet more treasures in the unknown reaches of space. Also controls the ability to spy on your competitors.
• And others!

Once you obtain an alien artifact and bring it back to your research department, you gain a number of Research Points (the exact number of which depends on the value of the artifact, usually ranging from 1-10), which you can then allocate to a branch of study. Once enough points are allocated to a branch, an advance is unlocked, which then gives the researching corporation a new piece of equipment, a boost of some sort, a number of research points or something of that sort. The exact amount of Research Points needed varies depending on level of advance, but it is usually somewhere in the 5-10 neighborhood.

Obviously, you win once you make the other corporations submit to you and become your subsidiaries (alternately, create an alliance of several corporations that can easily overpower any other corporation in the business). You also win if you manage some sort of alien technology-fueled ascent of humanity, should that be your kind of thing. There may be other victory conditions depending on the corporation.

Okay, I just typed this up and it seems ridiculously complicated. What do you guys think? I'm not sure this should be an RTD at all, to tell the truth. It would definitely be enough to drive a normal GM crazy, keeping reliable track of all that information. It would be like Einsteinian Roulette on a different scale, but more lethal for the individual personnel members.

Once again, this idea is not one I am likely to realize in the near future. Any that want it are free to grab it.

I have another space RTD idea.

You see, beyond the reaches of human-populated space, there is the Dark Nebula of Peril. Why do they call it the Dark Nebula of Peril, you ask? The answer is quite simple, actually. The reason the Dark Nebula of Peril is called the Dark Nebula of Peril rather than, say, the Nice Nebula of Pretty Lights and Philosophical Contemplation is, to put it simply, you. Why? Well...

You Are All Horrible Space Monsters, Man!

Yes, that is indeed the truth. You are all space monsters that dwell in the horrid, terrible reaches of the Dark Nebula of Peril. Why are you there, you might ask? That's a very good question. You see, it all started with a technologically advanced race of smartass aliens that decided to experiment with things they really shouldn't. To make a long story short, you are the result - evil nanobots, space vampires, sentient parasitic bacteria, doppelganger aliens, malevolent electromagnetic phenomena, highly playful extradimensional beings and many, many more. After having your own brand of fun with all the silly alien buggers (and then eating them or depositing them in a safe spot for the more boring days), you are now largely bored and alone in the Dark Nebula of Peril (sadly a frequent consequence of being highly successful at what you do).

Fortunately, in the last couple of thousand years, aliens of many races have achieved successful FTL space travel. They have also developed an unhealthy fascination with Dark Nebulas of Peril the entire galaxy over. And the best part is, they send you steel-wrapped presents all the time! How amazing! You guess you should return the favor someday. Maybe take a ride on one of said presents back to them and have fun in their houses as well! Oh, it should be absolutely delightful there! If only your friends in the Nebula didn't always get in the way...


Okay, here's the idea - you are a space monster of your choice. You are powerful. You are sentient. You are bored! You need something fun/productive/*untranslatable* to do! And sentient visitors are the only thing that qualify as such, sadly. They occasionally arrive, looking to investigate the Dark Nebula of Peril, at which point the Race Phase begins. The Race Phase is the point in the RTD when the respective space monsters in a particular sector of the Nebula (the current players) trip over themselves (and each other) trying to be the first to take over the hapless alien visitors to the Nebula and use them to visit places outside the Nebula comfortably and without issue.

Of course, you could band together, forming some kind of Space Monster League of Evil and head to the hapless alien worlds all together. Your choice. I would love to see a Space Monster road trip through populated alien space, myself.

Now, be warned. Aliens are unlikely to take this sort of treatment sitting down. They may possibly figure out your Secret Weakness (sent in PM), they might prove victorious over your mind control with the Power of Love, really, depending on the particular race, anything can happen. But that's where the *fun* truly is, you know.

Finally, don't forget to *enjoy the sauce*.
