If the tile's just floating in the air by itself, it can't make more than 1 tile worth of stone to fall. Unlinked ceilings are technically an infinite distance from supports, and are infinitely weak according to the system, so the RNG will easily generate cave-ins involving the entire ceiling. Although real life allows hanging pillars (stalaktites), and this system won't..

Or did you mean some more elaborate exploit?</STRONG>

Actually I was just recently thinking of this, what if you mined the rock holding that , would it fall?

If you mined the rock holding what?

A stalaktite (or a hanging column) would be impossible with that system, except as a specially designed item. If it were possible, mining out the tile (I might as well call it a cell, since it's got Z now) directly above it, the system would generate a cave-in event starting from the top cell in the stalactite (if it is several cells high), that would spread to all the cells below that since they have no additional support, and the end result would be a mini cave-in that would involve a fairly large heap of rocks falling on a single floor tile and bouncing off in unexpected directions.

Have to say though, you could make some awesome traps with this new system.

Forget stone-fall traps. How about the entire cavern collapsing on a besieging army?

Eh? Eh?

Try rigging supports to a lever in the current version.

I know, but it'd be far more impressive in 3d.

EDIT: Just realised you could have the floor collapse under invaders...

You could, in fact, have several floors collapse beneath them.

I also just thought of another thing: A real, working gladiatorial arena.

I don't know what you guys do, but I like to let my fighters practice in real battles with real enemies.

I intend to have a basement area about 3 levels down that is just a huge strip mine and all trapped out.  One opening for that would be retracting bridges in my main road path.  So siegers will get dumped into that mess.  Maybe they will survive the fall, but in any case it will be cage traps so they can be brought to my practice yard.

Once I know how such falling affects dwarves and others I will hopefully be able to set up all the traps to automatically dump siegers in there.  I may even make ramps so they just keep walking in to feed my dwarves insatiable desire for bones.

I know what would be cool. Giant Mechs.
Just make on big 3d statue out of a mountain then add ballistas and catapults as cannons missiles, lava floodgates and aduteqs and lazers, trained dragons as flameturrets, giant floodgates as weapons and xbow dwarfs as machineguns. To bad it can't move tho but those pesky goblins will get their ass kicked.

I wonder, with 3d, does this mean we'll be able to have firing balconies out over the goblin seiges, from which we can pour lava onto them and/or station our marksdwarves?

Balconies will definitely be possible (you can already shoot between different Z levels in Adventure Mode), although I dunno how well the system will handle blind spots.  We'll have to wait and see for that.

I am concerned about gravity and firing between different Z levels.  Shooting down should do some additional damage, shooting up should do less, and if the target is far enough up the arrow or bolt shouldn't even be able to make it.

It's actually pretty simple to "graft on" some physics logic into the way the game currently works, just make it so the arrow climbs the Z distance in one leap and use energy calculations to figure out if it can make it and its new speed (which would affect damage).
code:

mVn^2   mV^2
----- = ---- - m*g*h
 2       2

Vn^2 = V^2 - 2*g*h

Vn = sqrt(V^2 - 2*g*h)
