Pens, Pastures and Pets
« on: April 03, 2011, 11:21:18 pm »

"Because of this, the larger creatures like dralthas are virtually impossible to keep fed, and elephants are incapable of feeding themselves fast enough to stave off starvation. " (From the wiki)

Okay, so creatures need to graze to survive. So how do you feed things like elephants and dralthas that need large amounts of grass but can not get enough?
Can you remove the tag or lower the amount they need without having to restart?
Anything that isn't a herbivore needs no food?

You do not understand the ways of Toady One. He is not a business, he's just a guy trying to make a fun game. He's invited people to come along and experience the journey with him (and help him test it out as he goes along). At the end of the day, I don't think his main goal is to sell Dwarf Fortress, its just to create the best game possible.

To answer one of your questions, everything on this list needs to graze for food. No other animals need to eat.

You can't feed them sufficiently unless you remove the Grazer tag or increase the associated numerical value somewhat.

Both of these are viable options.

1. Okay, so creatures need to graze to survive. So how do you feed things like elephants and dralthas that need large amounts of grass but can not get enough?
2. Can you remove the tag or lower the amount they need without having to restart?
3. Anything that isn't a herbivore needs no food?
I seperated it into three.

1. Editing. That is the only way.

2. Yep. Do this. Data > Save > *Insert World name here* > Raw > Objects > (This depends on the animal. Explore to find the right file) > Edit the [GRAZER] Tag to  something like 80. That allows them to properly feed themselves. > Update your save game > Play > ??? > Profit

3. Correct

Thank you, all. That sufficiently helps :)

Lastly, that means anything with a no GRAZER tag can survive in a cage until old age?
